Default Finally got an SL1

I know, you never thought you would see it. I went today and looked at a 2002 SL1, automatic with ignition switch problems. Ran when parked 2018/19. It is the same color as my 02 LW300. Turns out I have known the owners for years, never knew they had this car and never noticed it driving by their house. I will go get it in a couple weeks, it is buried in the driveway behind a couple cars. The door jams and engine compartment have several yellow jacket nests, which is common here plus the wild blackberry vines.
😀

And of course there is an 2002 Sc2/5 for sale for $500 near by.

Key problems?? Kewly won' t turn?? Fairly common on 01/02 all models.

A real pain to fix. We have had 3 of them. I farmed out the last two. It was worth $200 to let somebody else handle it....

They told me the door locks work with anything besides the key. Looks common on the series 3 S cars.

And that's why I have my first gen 95 sc2 in the driveway.

Makes that speedometer sound and always will.
Will always get soaked getting in or out in a rainstorm because there are no rain gutters on a 95 coupe.

I thought the 94's had that issue with being able to steal the car using nothing but a key blank to open the doors and start the engine. Funny how people would steal them simply because they could, not because they wanted them.

The SL1's tend to make a lot of noise but not go anywhere. You want an SC2. Or an SL2. They have some pep although third gen has the wonderful BCM and pass lock, although not too many people on this forum with SOHC's or DOHCs ever seemed to have problems with the BCM like on l cars.

Welcome to the S side, Andy. I actually had an SC1 and it was a great engine. It wasn't a race car, by any means and if it hadn't been for that crappy TAAT4 automatic, I would have kept that car for a while. It got great mileage when the transmission wasn't giving too much trouble.

I still get about 35 on the highway with my SC2 now that the intake is fixed. It's gotten about 35 on the highway since the day my wife drove it off the lot. A little bit less with the AC on but since it hasn't worked in 15 years for more than 4 months at a time, it's pretty much 35. It needs a long trip but first it needs tires. Little too dry rotted for my tastes. I think they're about 13 years old.
