Film on Windshield

I have a 2000 S-Series Sedan. The defogger on my car tends to leave a film on the windshield after I use it. This is particularly annoying at night because headlights become blinding if the defogger isn't on. The film goes away when I use the defogger, but when I turn it off, it becomes vilible again. This makes driving very difficult since I really can't see a whole lot without using the defogger.

I don't think this was an issue for my grandmother who drove the car before me. However, she did not drive it as much as I do. The car only started being driven consistantly and often since January of this year. I cleaned the windshield a couple times druing the summer with Windex. That alleviated the problem only temporarily.

I've read a few posts on different forums where some suggest the issue is due to either the heater core or the dash vinyls out-gassing. Are these the only possibilities or could the problem be something else? Also, how much would it cost to have it fixed if it is the heater core?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. I greatly appreciate it.

if it were the heater core you would probably smell a sweat smell of coollant
in the car or possibly even see some kind of leak depending on where its leaking
from ? but yeah a if its a heater core its expensive to change out for sure
because its located in behind the dash pricey labour to change out.

Nothing is leaking yet so I guess it's another problem.

Yeah - plugged drain in the heater/AC area for one. Also, does your car have a sun roof? Another sourse of extra moisture.

No sun roof and the heat and AC work well. Yet there's an unexplained film.

ok so we no its not the heater core or ac/.
the cheap cure for that is cleaning the window
using shaving cream i no L,O,L.. but it works well keeping off
fog or steam YUP!. try it!

Thank you both for the help. I greatly appreciate it. I will try the shaving cream suggestion soon.
