cooling fan
 

I have a 95 sl1 that the cooling fan will not kick on, it will get to the redline and still wont come on. I have replaced the cooling sensor twice and the relay as well. Have yet to straight wire the fan to the battery which I have heard to try. Also have read that if the a/c coolant is low this can prevent the fan from coming on, is this correct? it is not coming on when I turn the a/c on either, car will run hot when you sit at a redlight or drivthrough ect.. but once you get to going it will cool itself back down, obviously because it is getting air to it. have also changed the coolant cap.

You may want to hot wire the fan to make sure the motor is still operational. You can then work back from there. If the AC is low on refrigerant, it will prevent the fan or compressor from energizing when in AC mode. It has no effect on the fan operation when engine temps require it. Normally the fan will come on when temp gauge gets to 3/4 scale.

Bad fan motor ... need to make sure you are getting +12 vdc to the fan

Bad fan relay .... will stop the fan from operating. Listen for a "click"

Blown fuse ....... no power to the fan means it has no chance of running -- actually you need to get a voltmeter, and check the above items in reverse order (starting with the fuse)

Yeah, its getting past the 3/4 line and still not kicking on. i have replaced the relay with no success but I am hearing a "click" like it is kicking on but nothing is happening..
I will check the volts and straight wire it to the battery to see if it fires up.
Where is the fuse for it located? There is not a listing for it on the fuse panel at the passenger side box, and only the relay listing under the hood..

OK -- Control voltage is getting to the fan relay, and the relay is "clicking".

Now, need to verify +12 vdc is getting to the fan motor. If voltage is present, most likely the fan motor needs to be replaced. If no voltage there, then the wiring going to the fan motor is bad.

I gotta look for (find) my manual for your car before I can tell you which fuse is involved with the power to the fan motor (its a different fuse than the one for the control voltage that operates the relay)

ok, I will check that. Should I go ahead and run a straight line to the battery to see if it kicks on anyway.
