okay heres the details it is a 1998 saturn sl2 with about 180k miles,

about a year ago the service engine light came on, said p0446 which is the Evap system "vent controll malfunction".

havent had anyproblems untill last night when the car died while driving. we checked out the battery it was putting out enough power.

its got fuel pressure, put a pressure tester on the fuel line to check to see if there was pressure while running. it had enough pressue. when the car shut off; it still had enough fuel pressure.

i can hear the fuel pump whine before you start the car.

has anyone had this problem before? please post replys on advice or anythign that may help.

Sounds like the Crankshaft Position Sensor has failed

the crankshaft pos. sensor would cause the car to shut off? if thats the deal would that be expansive to fix?

let me add that as of now, the car starts and will run for alittle while.

Well, the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) is probably your culprit, and I would replace it first. Now, if you continue to have problems, I would replace the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS) also. Those two sensors seem to cause the majority of no starting /or hard starts in Saturn cars. Not that expensive to replace, but a major pain in the backside if they go bad when you are away from home ...

thansk dude, put a new cps in and the car ran great for over 30 minutes (it usually died with-in 10-15 minutes when left running.) also the fix only cost me just under 17 dollars!

also the check engine light was from a vaccume hose that went from the engine block back to the air intake hose. the hose was cracked and broken at one end. as soon as i started the car the light went off.. im so glad now because idk when the car will have to go thru emmissions. but now it wont automatically fail..

thank you again ocean archer. we will actually see if that was the problem when i go take a ride around town and get some fuel.
