1-As old as your car is the most likely problem is that freon has escaped from a leak and the source of the leak be found and repairs made including replacement of the filter/drier before even contemplating recharging with refrigerant. Most DIY'ers jump to the store bought recharge cannisters (no R12 available for your model year) in a poor attempt at simple refilling without finding the source of the leak that inevitably leaks out the new replacement refrigerant over a period of time, some leak out immediately while others leak anywhere from a few days to a season.

2-You must realize that your a/c system used R12 Freon and that refrigerant has fallen out of favor insofar as repairing/recharging because R12 is now expensive (no longer manufactured) and difficult to find. Underground markets exists as well as clone brands if you're interested in cooling for just a season or two. There are issues involved requiring consideration ofcosts between retaining R12 as the original cooling refrgerant or converting to the accepted R134a refrigerant.

3-Your old system should be evaluated by a pro with due consideration to how long you want to hold onto your car for assessing the amount of money you want to invest to repair your a/c.

I checked the wire going to the compressor with a test lightand there is no power going to the compressor when the button is turned on inside the car. Does anyone know what may cause this to happen.
