99 sl2 fuel pump

hi guys im new to this forum, I have a 1999 saturn sl2 auto trans. Here is the problem I have. the fuel pump has failed so I have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump together. no the fuel pump does not want to kick on i have checked both the fuse and the relay. the only way it kicks on is if i jump the relay. when i do that it seems like it is not getting any fuel. ( this is after i installed the pump) is there any suggestions to what it may be? does it take awhile to build up pressure to the fuel pump? can i buy those relays? any help is much needed.

Sounds like bad fuel pump relay at a minimum.
fuel pump relays are indeed available -- you should be able to get at Saturn dealer parts dept or Autozone part 19263 (subsitute for OEM 12077865 ; 12177234 ; 12193602); $20.

If all components of the fuel system are functional, you should still have fuel pressure at the schrader valve (test port) in the fuel line under the hood on the way to the fuel rail.

After replacing the fuel pump relay, locate the schrader valve, crank the engine to get the fuel pump to prime the system , then put a rag over it and gently depress the valve-- if fuel pressure is building in the system, then you should end up with a rag dampened with fuel (which you need to dispose of responsibily to avoid fire hazards). If you have a fuel pressure guage, use that instead (of course) to check fuel pressure.

If there is no fuel pressure at the schrader valve, recheck the fuel filter and pump installation to ensure wiring is properly connected and there are no obstructions to the flow of fuel.

Let us know the results and we will troubleshoot from there....
