99 Burning Oil
 

My 99 SL2 with 95,000 miles is burning oil out of the exhaust pipe.
What do I do to stop this problem?

Rebuild the engine ........

Once oil buring starts, it is an indication of a lot of wear for whatever reason some where. Out the tail pipe usually means rings.
There rarely is anything you can do to stop it other than and engine rebuild. Although there are some viscosity index improving additives and heavier weight oils that may slow it down some.
Oil is cheap, compared to new engines and stuff.

I use 20 W 50 but I live in the desert where tripple digits have been a way of life for a couple of months now.
If oil consumption is fairly high, under 1000 miles per quart you probably have a pretty good sized problem and straight wieght detergent oil in 30 or 40 weight might slow it down better and is cheaper. If you live in the winter area where winter = snow and that sort of stuff you want to be in lower weights such as something in the 20# on straight weight or 10W30 in a multi-viscosity.
Each climate has it's own needs despite the number written on the oil fill cap which was designed to get maximum gas mileage with out concern for engine life or location.

if its smoking badly, thats a good indication that the rings are going. Mine consumes some oil too :/ doesnt smoke unless im at wot. i made a catchcan because i noticed these cars like to suck oil into the intake manifold.

97 SC2Drivers sympton is a classic indication of a compression problem. The only time I have had an engine do that is when I used a gasoline that was not compatible with the compression and detonation set in damaging pistons (holes and broken pieces) which if done often enough leaves
no piston and loud expensive noises.
A compression check would also confirm a piston problem. If the problem is not bad enough a squirt of oil while running the check through the spark plug hole will temporarily increase compression.
If bad enough nothing will do anything.
I still think todays problem(s) with oil consumption is a direct result of yesterdays factory recommendation of running a light weight oil for increased fuel mileage.
