Please help. I'm a newbie to this forum, but I've been a forum junkie for years. I know it's impolite to post questions without extensive searches first, but I'm in a tight spot hear. My a/c is screwing up and I have to leave for Miami on Monday, leaving me a day and a half to fix it.


The A/C works fine while driving, but a soon as I idle, it begins to kick on and off, more off than on. Eventually it will just stay off all together. My dash gauge reads at the middle for temperature. I have replaced both the a/c and cooling relays, and while doing so I realized that the Temp sensor by the fuse box is what kicks the a/c and fan on and off. So it must be a heat issue, right? The tube running to the sensor comes from the radiator to a box on the firewall, then back out to the compressor. I bypassed the switch for a minute to see if that was the problem, but it just made the compressor hot. So I abandoned that, and hooked the sensor back up.


Could this be a bad thermostat? Anybody else have this problem? It has been a great car, and in ten years of service, this is the first major problem we've had. It still gets 29mpg highway, so we plan to baby this thing for years to come. Thank you. Edited by: sw2cam

Sounds like the A/C needs to be charged up.

Have the A/C system pressure tested and see if it's within spec.

I bet you have a bad cooling fan motor. With motor running and AC on check to see if the cooling fan is running , if not then it is fairly easy to change and the part will cost around $60

You don't change a cooling fan because it does not turn on. You find out why it does not turn on and then fix the problem what ever it might be. Again have your A/C checked to see if it is in specs.Edited by: sw2cam
