98 Saturn SL2 Manual - New Never Before Seen Shifting Problem

So says every repair shop spoken to, to date. Slight rub when shifting through gears but major problem after putting car in reverse and backing out of garage (or anywhere else when moving in reverse over 15 feet or so). Can't shift into any other gear until car is turned off. Once out of reverse everything is reasonably ok. Clutch pedal has reasonable travel (~mid point when engaging).

Repair shop says not the clutch or master/slave cylinder. Dealer says possible switch problem. both say they would need to dissassemble and review - neither can provide a cost estimate and both advise they have never seen this before.

Any repair techs out there that might be able to guide me on approach?
