97 SC2 missing at speed

I can't find a post describing this--

Engine runs beautifully at idle and up to 1800 rpm as well as above 2200 rpm. If you accelerate even moderately between 1800 and 2200 rpm (40 to 55 mph) the engine hesitates, spits and coughs a bit. Below or above those speeds even hard acceleration does not induce the hesitation.

Thought at first it was the fuel pump, filter, pressure regulator problem that is described by others for these cars. Filter and pressure reg have been replaced with no benefit.

I will do the fuel pump if no other ideas come to light but wanted to check with all you pros on the forum before doing so in case there are other ideas.

I have a 93 SL3, last year engine would miss when accelerating at cruise speed. Turned out to be spark plug wires. Might give that a try. New set costs around $35.
