Just bought a 97 SC2 coupe with 1.9L DOHC, 80K mikes with a 5 speed
The car runs great when its cold, but when it warms-up, it hesitates when applying any pedal pressure. The car doesn't quit or anything, it just stumbles and goes on, until you change gears and apply the gas again. When cruising, it wil do the same when applying the gas.... Any suggestions / cures??? I would really appreciate it!!!! ThanksEdited by: sw2cam |
Classic signs of a bad temperature sensor. Check to see if its the original plastic tipped one. These usually crack. You'll need a new brass tipped one. OEM ones seem to be more accurate and can be found for less than $20.

Mike, Thanks...I'll get one tonight from Autozone. Where exactly is it on the 97 1.9L DOHC? I think I saw it under the thermostat housing.....Edited by: sw2cam |

Replaced the coolant sensor....with no change....still stumbles...but, the temp gauge seems to read at mid level now.....it use to read way lower.
When I looked at the original sensor....it was the plastic one, and was cracked. I'll try the TPS next.... If anyone has any other ideas..I would appreciate it!!! Thanks |
How was the condition of the connector that attaches to the coolant sensor?
|
It looked OK to me.....
I didn't see any coolant on the connector.... The contacts looked OK... To make sure, can I buy one of these connectors at a Saturn dealership, or can I go to a local auto place like Autozone.... I changed the TPS....nothing...still stumbles when hot. |
Had a similar problem on my 94 SL1 w/automatic about drove me nuts mine had the old coolant temp sensor on it which I replaced but what finally fixed it for good was an egr valve(the spring was weak I guess I tried cleaning it but it wasn't that dirty it didn't help)removed and replaced the EGR valve and the car is running great again. Good Luck.

I did get another EGR from a junk-yard last Saturday, and used it also....didn't work...
But I did notice that the spring was real "loose" on both my original and junk yard unit. I'm going to try blocking the EGR valve tonight, and see if that cures it.... If it does....well it's gonna hurt $$$$$ They're about $120 from Autozone.... |
