I have a 97 sc1 that will not start when the engine is warm unless you hold the pedal to the floor and even then it sometimes won''''t start, nor does the water temp gauge work, and neither does the e-fan. once its running, it runs great though. if you start it when the engine is totally cold it starts without any issues.

I suspect the water temp sensor and I am about to go get a book for it.

I just thought I would check with people who know a bit more about this car than I do to make sure I was on the right track.

Hi --Did you ever get any replies to your question? I have a '92 SL2 that starts cold but won't start warm. Seems like the fuel pump is strong. I did put a new thermostat in it and since then it runs a lot warmer than it did before -- wondering if temp sensor is an issue.
thanks,
Chris

Had one of those myself.

Textbook engine coolant temperature sensor (ECTS). Can't believe yours lasted this long.

When they fail they usually read -40 all the time. PCM makes the mixture so rich that you can barely start the engine. The electric fan never turns on because the PCM isn't getting the correct coolant temperature info from the sensor.

Your car has two temp sensors. The two wire sensor in the head, driver's side, is the ECTS for the PCM. The 1 wire sensor drives the dash temp gauge. Sounds like both are bad.

Source all parts through a Chevy /gm dealer or get the ACDelco gm oem or Delphi parts from Rock Auto.com if you want it to work properly. Also, replace the connector pigtail for the ects to ensure a solid corrosion free connection.

You may have to go on eBay to find the single wire sensor.
