97 Saturn SC1- runs great, but..24mpg city? really?

My 95 Saturn SC1, with a 97 engine installed gets about 22-24MPG City. The new Engine that was installed about 45 days ago has 60k miles on it.

Now... even with the car running well, could something very small be bad causing it a little loss of MPG? I mean its close to a 100hp engine right? should be getting more mpg then that ..with a lightweight body.... .... ......

What I have personally tried:

Ive tried high tire pressure, medium tire pressure, and recommended tire pressure. Getting the same calculations every time.

I honestly would be quite happy with a 97' gettin 22-24 city (dont forget, it is a 13 y/o engine in a 15 y/o car). Some new cars cant even achieve that today. I cant do that with my 99 sl2.

How exactly are you getting your calculations? Do you have one of those plug in computers that hook up to the OBD port?

But, things that always hurt mpg is filters, Check your air filter, thats normally a good place to start.Oh, and Always keep the tires at reccomended press, it will give you the best mpg while keeping your tires from wearing funny.

I'm with Octavious on this one ... your mileage seems totally reasonable given the age of the engine and the vehicle.

Sounds like you have a single cam?

I believe so yes. Because dual cams cant get an engine swap unless its another dual cam or something that. could be wrong

But yes, I believe its a single cam. And the engine life- The new engine does have 60 thousand miles on it. even though the car is older, the engine is still young.

According to the EPA, the 1997 Saturn SC1 would be rated at 24/36 with a 5-Speed and 23/33 with an automatic when tested by today's standards. I say you are right in line with where you should be.

I have a 1997 SC1 w/5-Speed, that has 268k+ miles on it. It runs like a charm!
I get about 22/33

When I average both out it comes to about 31-33 MPG. Not to shabby for a car that old with those miles on it ;)

I'm with the rest. Pretty much contemporary.
