96 SL2 shift problems
 

Hi everyone. I am new here and heard that I might get some help with my SL2. I have 177,000 miles on this car and love it. It is a great car and gets me 35mpg. The only problem I ever had was the shifter problem I now have. At about 171K it became hard to shift into gears. We changed the cables. Everything wa sfine for awhile then it strated to act up again and mechanic took out the new cables and said they were bent. So he replaced them at no charge under wtty. Cool, I loved that. Now they are doing the same thing again. It stuck in 1st gear this time. After some fooling around with the linkage under the hood I was able to free it up to drive to mechanic. It still shifts into all gears but hard. Coming out of 1st into 2nd is hardest. Getting to mechanic I put it in 1st and now wont come out so we took cables back out. They are not bent or broken :mad: So what should I be looking for? :confused: Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as I plan to drive this car till the doors fall off :) Thanks....

OK thanks to everyone that helped out on this. I got some really good tips here. The fix was an easy solution. My mechanic simply did a little mod job and the shifter is like new. :) It only cost $66.00 and that was after I was told by a saturn mechanic that I needed a transmission. Thank God for websites like this, and others I looked on, that gave me some good FREE advice. Thanks again and happy motoring. :D
