2002 SL2 Trip Odometer

I have recently purchased a 2002 SL2 with about 100k miles. It has this funky thing going on with the odometer I'm hoping someone can help me out with.

When I start the car, it always shows the trip odometer, and always resets to 0.0. If I press the button at any time while driving, the trip odometer resets back to 0.0, but it won't switch to the regular odometer. When I turn the car off, it switches to the odometer and shows it for about a minute without being illuminated.

It always showing the trip odometer isn't a big deal for me, its more that it resets to 0.0 after every start. Is this a BCM issue that I'll need to go to the dealer for or is it a gauge cluster issue? I read on this forum that the 3rd gen SL2 has the odometer and gauge cluster controlled by the BCM.

Everything else works on the car. Thanks!

It is controlled by the BCM, but there is a remote chance that the issue is in the reset button on the gauge cluster. It is mechanical and is subject to damage by someone pushing or hitting it too hard in the past. It might have a short in it.

The BCM appears to be working so this is looking like a case of GIGO (garbage in, garbage out).
