Yes. There is a passlock 2 sensor in the ignition switch. It must sense the correct key in the ignition or the security system is activated. If the sensor was damaged or the key is not being detected, the security system activates.

If you disconnected power to the ignition switch, the security system likely needs to relearn itself and synchronize communications between the different parts.

Once you have a functional ignition switch and functioning cylinder, you will need to do the GM passlock relearn.

I suggest you do the 30-minute version up front. Follow the steps exactly as written. Ensure your battery maintains it's charge during the entire procedure or the procedure will fail because the electronics will not be functioning properly.

If you need to replace the ignition switch, you must be sure to purchase a compatible one with the passlock sensor in it. The system will relearn properly with a different key and a different ignition to the best of my knowledge. Though having the ignition cylinder rekeyed would be much more convenient.

As I suspected, you will have to do the relearn procedure.

That charm stuff is pretty nice. I need to investigate it..

Here's a link to a sticky on our site that explains Passlock 2 as well as the actual procedure. They're kind of blended together. The relearn procedure for GM is all over the internet so you can find it elsewhere if you hate my write up

You will need to repeat the 10 minute cycle three times, it will start on the fourth try. You must follow the procedure exactly as it is written.

Ok. Once I get complete housing assembly, I will install and try it from there. I will let you know how it goes. Made a huge mistake drilling the cylinder I could've coded new cylinder using old one. 😀

If you take the title and the person whose name is on the title to a GM dealer, plus your driver's license etc, they can give you the key code for your vehicle. You then need to take your new ignition cylinder and the key code to a locksmith and have them repin it.

The alternative is to reverse engineer the pins by putting the key into the cylinder without the pins in place and, by trial and error, putting in the correct height pins such that the top surfaces of each are at exactly the same height and fit into the ignition switch exactly. This will allow the key to turn when they all get displaced by the key that is inserted. I've seen people rekey by trial and error in under 10 minutes. I know it would take me hours. Once you get the feel for it apparently it becomes child's play. Personally I would fork out the $50 plus the key code to a locksmith. And of course that would be before you install it because well just because.

Sweet. Ill probably do that, once I get home,I will work on it and also does it matter if I take it off auto matic or manual. Mine is manual and 2000 to 2002 sl. should be all good. Correct?
thank you for your help. To remove air bag and steering wheel battery has to be completely disconnected?

derf Apr 5, 2024 10:24 PM

Do a VIN based search for OEM replacement parts on a GM website to ensure that the same part number for the ignition switch and cylinder was used for 2000 to 2002 and for both manual and automatic. Don't assume because you know what happens when people make assumptions.

As for airbag safety, most vehicles have an SRS backup battery with charge maintained from the main battery. The backup battery is there so that if the vehicle that has been in a frontal crash and had its battery connections severed, the airbags will still be triggered should additional collision with the vehicle occur. Usually they last about half an hour. So after you disconnect the battery, the main battery, wait at least a half hour longer for the backup battery to drain.

I don't know that Saturn's had the backup batteries, I'm just playing it safe for your sake. You can look up and see if they existed in those cars or not. I've never looked. Today's cars, I think the answer is universally yes
