Tranny starting to "slam" in to gear. Has a clunk at about 35 mph either upshift or down shift

Noticed today that it felt like it was slamming in to 3rd, it almost feels like I hit a spot of ice and the wheel suddenly grabs, didn't feel like tranny was slipping thoughNoticed the other day that when I got on the hway. I had to get it up to around 68 mph to get it to shift.

Any ideas, tranny or axle. 114k miles

Did you check the obvious.... tranny fluid level? maybe some of the saturn buffs on the forum might have ideas on possible electrical crap that may have gone haywire

Checked fluid level...OK...fluid still looks pretty good and doesn't really smell burnt.

Shift from 1st to 2nd is real smooth, its the next one that bangs, shift after that is smooth too

It's either the valvebody or the output shaft nut. You can not always tell by driving what one. Take it into your nearest Saturn dealer to have it checked out.

Changed fluid/filter, did "did reverse slam cure", no real diff. I did notice that going from "R" to "N" I get a real loud clunk, comparible to backlash in a RWD vehicle.

Road tested and still have clunk inforward gears, tranny seems to shift fine, no slipping, just the clunk which I can feel in the steering wheel and floor...thoughts?

<DIV id=post_message_961497>Took it out today, let it warm up, drove it about 8mi, trans. fluid got to approx. 113* ( according to out Snap-On scan tool) outdoor temp. was 35* no record of slippage.
It shifted fine, no slams, actually the best it has been in quite awhile. I went up four good size hills, no probs. downshifting. I'm kind of waiting for the "other shoe to drop". It ran great.
The only thing I did notice that I hadn't in the past was a slight vibration in the front, it coincided with speed. It was like a shaft out of balance, not bad but I could hear it, wife prob. will not, it had sort of a drone to it. The road I was on very flat and free of bumps and flaws, could have been there b-4, just didn't notice it. All I did was the trans fluid and fltr. along with the "reverse slam procedure"
Wife will be taking car to work this PM, about 26 miles round trip, will see how it performs for her.</DIV>
