01 SL2 cranks, won't start

I drove it maybe half a mile and it was running fine, shut it off now it will only crank (usually I touch the key and it starts)

fuel pump still primes and there's pressure at the rail

pulled a plug wire and didn't get any spark

checked EIS, IGN, PCM fuses and all were good

security light doesn't come on

CPK has good resistance

pulled off the ignition module and coil packs, cleaned the contacts

I got a code reader and it's not showing any codes (I did this after disconnecting the battery to take the coils off and check the CPK)

any advice on what I should do next? I'm pretty sure it's either the ICM or ECM but can't find a way to test them by myself and I'm not sure if any codes will come back without the car running (if there were any)

What resistance is good resistance for the CKP?

CKP failure, intermittent or permanent, will kill spark and injectors. So the fuel pump operation is not impacted, only the injectors are inhibited.

Ckp in process of failing may test fine on the bench but may not be fine when installed. Failing behavior may also become heat dependent. Also carefully inspect the pigtail for the ckp and the cleanliness of the ground screw and the metal ring around it on the ckp. At least I think it's a grounding ring. Haven't looked at one in years I can't remember. If not, disregard.

Have you checked the resistance across each coil? Have you done the coil Arc test where you pull off both plug wires and crank at which point you should see an arc between the two coil tower posts?

How many miles on it and how much oil does it burn per 3K Miles?

Please post back with the ckp resistance with it installed.

with CPK installed I got 850 on the multimeter, even tried a new one
pulled the wires off the coils and got no spark on either
180k miles, I'd guess it burns 1.5qt after 3k but I'm not sure
coil resistance is 7750, the under side is .6 on both

checked the pink and black wires on the ICM plug, got 12v with the key on
I do smell gas when cranking with the pedal to the floor

store near me had an ICM in stock so I picked it up, just put it in and the car runs like it used to

Excellent.

AC Delco or another brand? And if so, which one??

Jellie Nov 27, 2025 03:57 AM

only one I could get in stores was from standard, it works but added a quirk to the car
~5 seconds after starting the car it almost stalls for a half second then runs fine, happens every time it's hot but cold starts are good
I'll order a delco one and return this before it becomes a problem

Must have gotten a dud. I've had a standard one in my 95 for about 15 years.

Return as defective to save some other poor soul that comes along in 7 years from having to do the same. I don't understand why some people who buy defective parts don't tell anyone when they return it. Asinine. And I'm not referring to you to be clear
