2005 Saturn L300 CEL and Reduced Power
 

I just bought a 2005 L300 at an auction. It has 25k original miles however the check engine light and it's down on power. I can't get it to go past 15mph. It's giving me the codes P2119, P0638 and P2100. They all seem to be for the Throttle Actuator control. What could be the problem?

P2100 Throttle Actuator Ctrl Motor Circ/Open

This sounds to me like the fundamental issue. If the electrical circuit that drives the throttle plate is "open", there is no current running to the motor and it therefore NEVER MOVES. If the motor doesn't move, the throttle plate doesn't move. If the throttle plate doesn't move, the car does not accelerate.


This is either a fuse, a wiring problem between how the power gets to the actuator motor, the electrical path to ground AFTER the motor, or the actuator motor itself is toasted (coils open).


Again, in any of the above cases, you do NOT have a completed electrical motor drive/actuator circuit and therefore the throttle plate cannot move.


P0638 Throttle Actuator Control Range/Performance B1 (Bank 1)


The PCM/ECM uses the throttle position sensor (TPS) to monitor the actual throttle blade position and when the actual position is out of range with the target position, the PCM/ECM will set the DTC P0638. Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine with cylinder number one, however most vehicles use one throttle body for all cylinders.

The ECU monitors the Throttle blade position, and if the position reported is out of the specified limits of operation OR the ECU detects the throttle actuator is not performing as it should, including actuating the throttle to a position commanded by the EMU (in this case, the position is never changing so it picks up on that as a performance issue and throws the code.)


If the throttle actuator control is built in as an integral part of the throttle body, you may need to purchase or scout a junkyard for a replacement throttle body.

There is also a TSB out for replacement of an Instrument Panel to Body Control panel cable. but it applies to intermittent codes.

Do you know what fuse might cause this issues? I checked the owners manual but I don't see one that would cause this problem.
