Cams 3 and 4 timing notch mystery solved? There really are two notches on each gear of cams 3 and 4. Hanes shows the exact same thing. The Hanes diagram even shows the exact orientation of the notch in relation to each tooth as matching the notch orientation on my gears. Exactly 3 teeth between each notch. Both gears. Maybe GM used these cam 3 and cam 4 gears in another setup on another motor. Cams 1 and 2 have one notch each. So the front cams, 3 and 4, were close. Intake is right, exhaust is off one tooth. #1 exhaust is the one that's 2 teeth off. Locking tool kit is on the way. The timing belt idlers and tensioner aren't cheap. But after all this, I don't want to go back in this engine again. So I'l probably just suck it up and replace everything in there. https://www.autozone.com/cart
Nice job of figuring that out, man. I'm impressed with your tenacity. I hope you get it right the first time and don't have to keep effing with it. That gets frustrating. If you do, just lay your tools down and walk away. Grab a cold beer, take your time drinking it and THEN go back and get it right.
The sprockets interchange between the two cams, the keyways are not the same as the other head. That is why there are two marks on that set of gears. The idler pulleys that came with the belt kit that I bought did not have the offset adjustable centers. I pushed the adjustable ones out and pressed them into the new pulleys with a bench vise.
It looks like the timing idlers on the kit I bought do have an offset center. If not I'll press them out like you did. Stuff should be here by Tues. I'm off Wed, so maybe this will come together on Wednesday. Any input on the po 727 code? Engine speed input. It didn't set a specific crankshaft position sensor code. My manual is in the shop and I'm too tired to go out and look up which code the crankshaft position sensor is.
P0727 is a transmission module code for loosing the engine speed input. You also have a loss of communication code between the ecm and the tcm. You did not list any engine codes, just tcm codes. I would fix the belt and see how it runs.
It's always been a rule of thumb for me. If the water pump is part of the timing belt set up, just to replace it at the same time. Just like Andy said, they NEVER last two timing belts.
