Question new member- 2000 ls200 with a few dash related problems-could use help please

I recently bought from my neighbors a 2000 LS2, great driver and it stops fine. All exterior lights work like they are supposed to. What the problem is, is this. When I first turn the car on all of the warning lights, and I mean all of them come on and flash and then after maybe 5 seconds the go out. But then there are no dash lights, when turn signals are activated the mileage also pulses with the blinker, also both of the indicators stay lit and the both pulse. meaning they don't completely go out and relight again. When the turn signals are activated the gas gauge, speedo, rpm gauge and coolant temp. gauge all dive to the left like when the car is not turned on,but as soon as the signal lever is back at it's resting place everything goes back to working again. This also happens when the headlights are turned on. I have checked all the fuses associated with the dash, and at the wire connectors I put contact grease to help with the connection. My neighbors husband said he checked the bulbs and claims they are fine. If anyone has experience with these problems I would greatly appreciate any words of wisdom that you would deem fit to share. Thank you

It sounds to me like the multi-function switch needs replacing, but I'm NOT a mechanic. Fortunately for you guys, we have a member here that is quite knowledgeable about the L series Saturns. I'm sure as soon as Andy sees this, he'll have better ideas than mine. Stand by.

And I'm not that expert.
But it sounds like either there is a grounding issue or the BCM (body control module) is failingfailing.

I'll let Andy our L car expert handle the rest of the diagnosis and repair options.

Default problems

I forgot to mention that the multifunction switch has been replaced. and the rest of the interior lights are lighting, console ect.. I did try changing the bcm but it just made it worse. But as I have learned about the bcm I didn't have it reprogrammed. I appreciate the great ideas. Thankyou

First, Welcome to the forum. Please look at my car’s picture and verify that your car looks the same. If so please describe the headlight switch to me. It needs to have an off position. Installing the incorrect headlight switch causes lots of problems with lighting and relays.

So everything works correctly except for the instrument cluster? The turn indicators work correctly on the outside of the car?

Since you have changed the bcm with no change I would plug a different cluster as a check. If there is no change the problem is most likely in the harness, broken ground wire.
