Soft clutch pedal 1999 Saturn

This car has had shifting problems for eight years. Shifting into low or other gears when stopped. Not all the time but a lot of the times. Rolling up to a stop sign there is no trouble shifting into low. A mechanic said the clutch was going out. I have had manual transmissions before and a bad clutch doesn't last eight years. I put in a new slave cylinder last year but didn't change anything. But now the clutch peddle fells soft when I step on the clutch. I would like to ask what causes the clutch peddle to be soft? Is it the clutch? Did the new slave cylinder go bad? What do you think the problem is?
