Another L200 followed me home

I bought myself a birthday present today and brought a silver blue L200 mid level car home today. Clean paper and a pretty clean unmolested car with aluminum wheels. $200 I couldn’t pass it up, no rust out here. A little mold on the rear seat but those clean up pretty well here. I remove the upholstery and pressure wash everything and let it dry. I will put a battery charger on it and see what I have. I was told they replaced the fuel pump but it still has a problem, it has been sitting a year or so. Someone at work has known the previous owners since high school so I am not overly worried.

Danged if you don't fall into crap and come out smelling like a rose more than anyone I've ever known. I sure hope it's something minor and you have a great car. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY. What day is it or are you just being facetious? My birthday is the 28th. I'll be 62. I've already lived more than twice as long as I ever thought I would.

02 LW300 08-06-2018 10:06 AM

8/4 and I am now 63.

Rubehayseed 08-07-2018 01:36 PM

Well, I'll be...... I thought I was the oldest member since Uncle John disappeared.

Tore into the silver blue car over the weekend. Finally got a hot battery in it to see what I had. Cranked fast but would not start, had some compression. A compression check told the tale, all low and not even none over 100. Off came the valve cover and this car is a victim of Pennzoil with infrequent changes. Nothing personal if any of you runs Pennzoil.
It works fine if you change it when it gets dirty. The top chain guide had no plastic left on it. I did find it sitting in the sludge, the cams were out of time but the chain had not broken. The cams and followers look perfect, no wear at all. I pulled the front cover and removed the chain and gears. I ran a leakdown test since I could turn both cams with a 24mm wrench. A couple lifters were pumped up but some gentle persuasion with a hammer and punch showed no bent valves. Win! The head does not have to come off. I ordered $400 of timing, gaskets, water pump, tune up and filters from Rock Auto. I do have a 5% discount code good through October if anyone needs it. Might get back to it on Labor Day weekend. We are going to meet halfway to return the Olds to my oldest daughter, it is ready to go. I bought a front motor mount from Rock Auto for just under $30 delivered, Napa wanted $120.

I learned my lesson about Pennzoil and Quicker Sludge (Quaker State) years ago when I was rebuilding engines. I won't put either in any of my stuff, not even my lawn mower. I prefer Mobil One or Castrol.

19bonestock88 08-23-2018 03:07 AM

I usually run Pennzoil in my Ecotec but I also try and change it when it gets dirty, or 3-4K miles... given that my driving style has the engine off for about 2/3 of miles driven, the oil still appears to have life left when I drain, even if I go over a little on the mileage... YMMV though...

02 LW300 08-23-2018 10:42 AM

Just change the oil when it starts to change color. If you let it get black the solids start to settle out and everything gets covered with black slime. I’ll post a picture.

19bonestock88 08-23-2018 09:32 PM

Usually when I drain it’s almost black, with a hint of amber that can be seen through light... I don’t ever re all it coming out coal black though...

All the parts arrived last week so yesterday was Saturn day after a morning dump run. I had removed the main chain so I could do a leakdown a couple weeks ago.
I have the car in the shop on the hoist and for an old man this is the only way to go. I removed the balance shaft chain, guides and tensioner. I then replaced the water pump, on this car the water pump is driven by the balance shaft chain. Next I installed the new balance shaft chain and associated parts. Next was the main chain and guides. The cam bolts are torque to yield one time only use. The Cloyes factory replacement kits come with all necessary pieces. Once I had everyting in time I cranked it over to clear the cylinders. I had used atf as part of my wet and dry leakdown test a couple weeks ago. I checked compression and all were over the 250 maximum on my Snap-on gage. Good enough! I finished assembly changed the oil filter and 5 quarts of new oil. Dexcool in the radiator, new AC sparkplugs. It started on the third revolution, boy did it smoke! Got high fans and a check engine light in about 5 minutes running. It had a hard lean code, the data said I had a dead front o2 sensor. The rear sensor said it was way rich so I took it for a 10 mile ride. This morning after some research I installed a used downstream 3.0 o2 sensor. I quick bulb refresh and I went on a 15 mile ride. I will transfer and register the car on Tuesday and start driving it. It needs a good scrubbing inside and out, sway bar links and some new wipers.
I need to pull some maintenance on my stick shift car so this is a perfect time. I got a new fuel pump from Bones a couple years back and my car has started to smell like gas when stopped. So I will drop the exhaust and the tank to replace the unit. I have also ordered adjustable lower rear control arms and they will be here on the 9th. With the adjustable lower arms I will be able to pull some of the camber out of the rear end. I cut one complete coil off the rear springs and half the bump stop. The car came down to almost level and I really like the look. I am going to leave the front stock height and get the car aligned.
We ran all the way to Tri-cities to drop off the Oldsmobile last Monday, 640 miles round trip.

I love to read success stories by good mechanics. I'm guessing the ATF caused the smoking and may have done something to the 02 sensors?

02 LW300 09-03-2018 10:35 AM

Yes to both and after the o2 sensor died the pcm went full rich also adding to the smoke. What I am surprised about is that the pcm did not look at the fuel mapping, all the other inputs and the downstream o2 sensor and then disregard the front sensor. This car is probably too old for that kind of fuel logic. That is what I did, I have always said you have to be smarter than the computer to repair it.

Rubehayseed 09-03-2018 06:45 PM

That's why I don't fool with them, Andy! LOL

02 LW300 09-05-2018 12:14 AM

I transfered and registered the silver/blue L200 automatic car today and drove it to work. I am making a mental note on what else it needs to be a reliable car for the next owner. I noticed that when I use the turn indicators the daytime running lights go off and the flash to pass brights come on. This is how these multifunction switches fail on these cars, the spring for the dimmer function gets weak and the lever becomes floppy. It even let out some magic smoke on the way home tonight! I ordered a genuine GM switch from Rock Auto.

Sway bar links are also another weak point on these cars. I am going to drive this car for a while while waiting for the title to arrive. I will also use this time to make some needed repairs to my stick shift car. I ordered KYB struts and some Moog problem solver sway bar links for my stick shift car. I also have some adjustable lower rear control arms coming so I can get the car aligned. I will put the new stuff on my stick shift car and transfer the good used switch and links to the automatic car.

More to come as time goes on.....

19bonestock88 09-05-2018 12:32 AM

Got any good full car pics to show us?

02 LW300 09-05-2018 12:41 AM

I will have to take some. It is cleaning up nicely, there is damage to the rear bumper cover that I will need to deal with. The rest of the car is pretty.clean, there are a couple small dents with no paint damage. One I can get behind and maybe make look a little better but the other is in the door above the window and is a double panel. It has gray cloth interior, light colored carpet is difficult to keep clean. Probably some Walmart carpeted floor mats will help.

Update on the next for sale L200. I actually painted a spare dark blue bumper the close to correct color blue/silver. Bumpers are hard to match and this the paint mixed by my retired professional painting buddy. He told me up front that it wouldn’t match but would be close enough. I haven’t painted anything but touchup in 15 years but it doesn’t look bad. The original bumper cover had been cycled all the way across and had a hole the size of a trailer ball. It looks fine in person.

02 LW300 10-16-2018 10:04 PM

The main thing left after the bumper was the headliner. The fabric was falling off the foam and really detracted from the car. I went to Pick a Part today and they had 4 L series cars, one had a nice headliner. Headliners come out the passenger front door the easiest. Unfortunately I could not open that door all the way at the yard. There was a Camaro too close, so I leaned on it a little. It rocked in the wheels welded together it was sitting on. I quickly quit, thinking of how pissed they would be if I started a domino effect at the wrecking yard. I had to fold the headliner some and it came out the lr door undamaged. $50 and I brought visors and some cruise control and mirror switches and all the screws.
Most of you will understand but trips to the wrecking yard is one of my favorite things.

too many Saturns?

the 4 L series.
You can see the difference between the 2000 silver and the 2002 silver on the front car. The second car is the blue silver 02 that is ready to sell after I replace the power steering pump. the third car is green and is a 2000 LS1 with a bad engine. I have the correct color front bumper and fender for it. It is the next project. The last one is a 2000 LS2 that has a good engine and a bad tranny. I bought it for silver body parts but it is the wrong silver. I do have a bad 3.0 and a good tranny just waiting for the right deal on a L300. LOL

That’s a good looking fleet of cars parked there lol...

have you obtained your dealer license yet? Lol

02 LW300 11-11-2018 11:57 PM

Only selling one a year so I am probably ok. If I retire and get busy I will have to get a license.

Rubehayseed 11-12-2018 07:36 AM

If you retire, you'll probably make more money selling used Saturns! You seem to find them at very good prices and do some great work getting the back on the road, Andy.

02 LW300 04-16-2019 10:10 PM

I sold the blue-silver car tonight. To the first person to drive it and see how nice a car it is. I had come down to $1625 on my listings and accepted a $1500 cash offer. Now I can think about the green one later this summer.

derf 04-19-2019 07:29 AM

$ 1500 cash is more than a drop in the bucket in exchange for the work and pleasure you put in and receive while re-souling these vehicles....

02 LW300 04-19-2019 10:13 AM

It turned out to be a very nice car, I had been driving it some each week. I put about 4000 miles since the engine repairs so I could say it was repaired properly. The lady that bought it would have paid the asking price but I like to explain title and transfer fees to them and give them a tank of gas. She was very happy with the deal and so am I.

19bonestock88 04-19-2019 04:40 PM

It’s good to hear!
