2003 L200 Rear Brakes are a pain
Hey, popping in to see if anyone has had this problem before, I’ve had my L200 for a couple years now and last year my passenger rear brake pretty much fell apart in the drum. I got it fixed, then the driver said did something similar, now for the last year I’ve had to replace both sides brakes pieces (cylinder, springs, other parts) now we’ve done this 2 times on each side and without fail they brake again. Is there something wrong with the replacement kits or something that makes this happen? I doubt we’ve done them wrong, the brakes work perfectly for months then they brake one by one. |
I think I read that one of the springs in the kit is incorrect. That might be your problem. There was a discussion over on Saturnfans. |
I heard this as well before from the saturnfans forum, I've been unable so far to find the post again talking about it, I remember it being something about the fork needing to be adjusted in the replacement kits to account for the different size pads in the drum or something.

bad breaks
I saw that they are an atrocity. Actually, probably a part of Saturn's anti-diy bias. It is not user friendly. I had things fall apart briefly after doing a brake job. I had had something wrong. No big damage was done. The brakes now work well but one wheel squeaks on harder braking. I deduce (theorize) that I may have failed to put grease on the backing plate. This could not squeak but the drag could cause the shoe to cant a little causing the squeak. This is because this is listed as a cause for this malady.
But usual brakes do not even come near the backing plate, being suspended above it by the shoes notched into the pistons and the springs. But with Saturn, the shoes are sliding against the backing plate. I intend to look into it ASAP. I also have a new WC to put in that side, but don't like to immobilize my transportation, even though I have alternative. Still, I think your case is a worst case scenario. Maybe we should set up our rear brakes with the factory gig and be on the winning side. |
Actually all brake shoes are meant to contact the backing plate on the three raised area for each shoe. Been that wat forever.
