I rarely use the power mirror control to adjust the mirrors as I was the only person driving the vehicle in 20+ years. Still I remember one time I was playing with it and one mirror would not move, the other took some time to get going (just playing with the control pushing the buttons). Now both are stuck and would not move. Is the door mirror switch where I should start from? Is this switch likely to fail? There seems to be a fuse for the mirrors on the driver side box, but it is also associated with functions that still work.
Also a month ago, after I had my wife drive the vehicle for a while, my door power locks stopped unlocking with the removal of the key from the ignition. I remember she somehow managed to kill the engine, I had to restart the vehicle and a couple of minutes later the door locks were turned on and off by themselves, after which they no longer reacted to the ignition switch. No idea how to ago about this one as well.
I ordered a new mirror switch today and will see if this fixes the problem.
As for the ignition to door locks connection I found the diagram below. My guess is that cable "F" is burnt out. I had white smoke come out of the steering column a couple of times back in 2023; did nothing about it and it did not reappear, but this must be the wire that was loose and burned. I will take the car to a mechanic to inspect the ignition.
Regarding the mirrors, I encountered intermittent instances where the mirrors on our 2001 L200 would not respond to the switch in certain directions but after repeated attempts ("playing" with the button on the switch), operation would resume. Suggested remedy: You can remove the switch fairly easily from the door panel by prying gently up. May have to push in the tabs underneath a bit while doing so. You can then disconnect the harness from the switch. The switch can be opened up without destroying it. After doing so, clean up the contacts inside. A clean eraser on the end of a pencil works good for this. Reassemble and you should be good to go if it was indeed the switch.
This method of cleaning the contacts also works very well for the RKE fobs which are very easy to open up.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Tsport !
I thought about this possibility and took the switch off, but what I did was to only vacuum clean it, using the suction of a vac cleaner (did not have an air bottle).
Cleaning it this way did not change anything as it must have been inefficient. I can try to disassemble the switch, now that I have another one on the way. Nothing to lose.
Cleaned the switch some more, but still no luck with any of the mirrors. There is supposed to be a fuse for the mirrors on the driver's side panel, but I think it is also associated with preventing the car going into gear when the brake pedal is not pressed. This second function still works, so probably it is not this fuse either. Might be broken wires somewhere. They usually break at the door, but all other door functions still work.....strange.
