Rusted out lines

We got an 07 a week or so ago and this past weekend got to where it would crank over and start.

While it was running I could smell really strong gas and just looked down and there was a big puddle of gas.

Looking under the car and sure enough the same thing that was wrong with our 04 coupe.

This one was definitely worse than the 04.

Both lines (fuel & evap) lines were rusted through.

The seller told me it had an evap leak, I kinda knew it was going to be the rusted lines, since the car spent most of its life in Ohio.

All the fuel/evap lines on my L series cars are plastic. Of course the L series cars are Opel/Vauxhall cars with European blood lines. The Ions were designed here.

Ouch that's nasty.

Gonna have my 97 SC2 on a lift today. I should probably check them. Car spent its first 15 yrs in Wisconsin and New Jersey....now by Pittsburgh.....

Sounds like your car is running on borrowed time, derf. Since you're going to have it on a lift anyway, why not go ahead and replace them as a "preventative" measure?

Would have been helpful had I remembered to look.

I did notice that the driver's side of the cradle was significantly more rusted than the pass side which is almost rust free...

Oh well

It sucks getting newish lines back on there, they get a little bent out of shape when trying to install.

Rubehayseed 10-03-2016 07:11 AM

And I'll bet the installer does too! LOL

Yes they do, I found some online that come in 3 pieces to connect together for $160.

Couldn't see paying that when I got newish ones for less than $20.

Have you looked at the Pull A Part out on Centennial Blvd, Tooter? That's the good thing about being in Tennessee. You can get a LOT of stuff off cars there and not worry about rust. I'm a cheap bastard, so that's what I'd have done.

I went to one closer to my house called Express Pull N Save.

I got those from the only ION they had. They had a little surface rust but, I sprayed them with some self etching primer and paint and should be good for a long time.
