Met bones in WV, blew up his Ion Red Line

I met Bonestock today in Clarkesburg, WV.
Love that 70 mph speed limit...
Of course it rained all day.
I showed up 1.5 hours late...
We had lunch & chatted for hours at an Applebee's, which has a no weapons policy so we both felt safe from the start.

After the rain let up and the roads dried a little bit, he asked me if I wanted to experience the rush of the boost of his red line. I asked him if he was sure; he said "yeppp". Into the Recaro driver's seat I went.

He drove my 95 SC2 and I drove the IRL over to Route 50 which has some nice weaviness to it.

He told me not to be afraid to wind it up while driving it, and I did not disappoint.

Until...

At about 70 mph it was wound up in 4th, 15 # of boost. Head pinned to seat. Shifting into 5th, I fumbled my foot putting in the clutch while accidentally leaning on the accelerator. The combination of this pair of mistakes had me at 6500 rpm in neutral. As soon as I tried to let the clutch out in 5th, it grabbed hard and there was a booming POP from under the hood, followed by metal on metal clanking the likes of which I have never heard, followed by two smaller thumps in succession, all while the engine went lifeless.

I looked in the rear view. Oil slick. White smoke out the tail.

I immediately drifted over to the shoulder but already knew it was gone.

We found not one but 2 rods punched through the block.

I stared in disbelief.
Bones cried, then looked me in the eye but said nothing. Didn't need to.

I killed his dream ride.

Now I have to figure out how to make it right....
Suggestions welcome.....

Way to kill the kids dream man, good job.

don't be a snotty little ****, goalie. I feel like **** already.

I'll cut you a deal on an l61 short block and you can build him a new motor for under a grand. New pistons and rods forged for the boost will be about 800. Slap the lsj head on, and you have a 2.2 lsj. Easy fix for about a grand.

Just got off the phone with bones. Talk about upset.
I feel bad. He needs a hug.

May take a trip up there when I get back to let hime drive mine. Might make him feel better.

Oil pan failure, I hate that. I'm glad you weren't in a tight turn because it really hurts to spin out in your own oil and back it into the wall. Sorry dude but it can be repaired. I think the high boost Saab Ecotec has the good bottom end also, they are only 2.0 liters though.

The redlines are 2.0l

Saab 9-3 from 2003+ are Ecotec with turbo, they have some kind of BS Saab control system. The 2.0t is the low boost model and the 2.0T is the high boost engine. Might be another source for donor parts.
Sorry for your loss, I hate blowing **** up it is so messy.
We lost a Focus engine at work and it was the classic NASCAR puke, oil water and shrapnel
all over the road. Lots of kitty litter and push brooms.

No body likes low boost though. I'm pushing 16/17#s on the baby m62. And I'm about to turn that up. Youre right, it is a source for parts. Its the same motor, just a baby snail instead, attached to a much better tranny.

Yup, my car is dead... Still doesn't feel real, but a quick affirmation is available whenever I turn the key... Still not sure what to do about the car... Do I rebuild it? Do I snag my moms ION and part the IRL to fix the base model?

Upon further examination, the engine is in fact rebuildable... It'll cost me though...
