Ignition key
A simple question about the ignition key. Is the key for the Ignition on an Ion the transponder type? My daughter only has one key for her car. Wouldn't be a problem, but, she also locks her keys in her car more frequently than anyone I know. Would appreciate your support as I would like to buy a few blanks and have them cut so we have a spare set in case she locks her keys in the car again.

The L series does not use a transponder key, I don't know about the Ion. If you are really only looking for a door key a regular blank will work.

I'm with Andy on this one. Go to Walmart and get several keys made. Get a magnetic key box and attach one under the car somewhere that SHE can reach it and knows where it is. Have her put an extra key in her purse or wallet or something that she takes everywhere with her. Tape it to her frigging phone if you have to. You and your wife and any other drivers in the house should all have one too. That way, whoever has to come to her rescue will be able to unlock the door for her and let her get the car home.

Velcro it behind one of her ears and put a pencil or cig in front to hide it....
Rewire the doors with a Volvo (or is it Saab) locking system (guess you need a 2nd PCM or BCM) so that she can't lock the doors unless she uses the key. The guys are right. A plain blank is fine for the doors. It WILL start the car as well, as it is not a transponder key per link above. Why not get another fob? Or does this car not have RKE and security? I thought it was standard.... |
Thanks for all the input and advise. I do plan to buy a key fob if the car has the active system. In checking the different websites that sell the blanks, the sites don't indicate one way or the other if the ignition key has a transponder in it. Only way I can definitely know, I guess, is to take the key she has to a locksmith. Anyway, I will be getting a few blanks for the door. Due to her friends breaking in the passenger side door the window regulator was damaged. Replaced it already and now searching for why none of her windows will work. Hope it's just a broken ground wire that serves all four windows.

fuse? Could have shorted something.

If you have any questions regarding the ignition key then it is always beneficial to contact a car locksmith. They can provide all information regarding it.

Hey Steve, this thread is over 5 years old. I'll bet they don't even have that car anymore.
