Default 2005 ion Fuel Level problems

i have a 2005 saturn ion 2.2, and i recently went to the gas station for a fill up, and when i was done i noticed the check engine light was on and the fuel gauge was going from empty to full repeatedly. the CEL went away after a day but I'm still having the fuel level reading problem. i scanned it but no codes came up. I've been to the gas station a few times and the CEL comes one every time i put gas in the tank but then it goes away after the day, but the fuel lever reading issue wont go away. the fuel pum still works fine and the car runs great. I'm thinking its either the sending unit, or the fuel gauge itself, and i wanted to ask you guys what you think it may be before i spend the money, because a new sending unit/fuel pump assembly is around $230. any input on this will be appreciated, thanks.

Gas cap can cause a cell or any other leak in the sealed fuel system. There is an open RECALL on the fuel pump for many ION's. Call GM customer service with VIN in hand to inquire. Be persistent they have been known to repair many that are not in the VIN range.

If you need to buy a fuelpump out of pocket. Do yourself a favor and get the OEM pump from anyone selling new GM parts.
