2003 Ion upgrades

I just got a 2003 Saturn ion (I believe a 2). Its a manual with the 2.2 v4 eco engine. It seems pretty nice, but i was wondering what some pretty cheap upgrades to do are. Maybe the steering wheel or exhaust? Not looking to spend a million dollars, and im kinda new to this stuff. Thanks

Agreed, there are many upgrades that can be done to a level 2 sedan... I don’t believe that changing the steering wheel is “legal” as it tampers with the airbag system, but there are lots of other customizations to do...

if you wanna go faster there are parts that you can bolt on to gain some upper RPM power (notice how the 2.2 kinda runs out of steam over 5600?)

suspension upgrades are also really easy when viewed that GM used this platform not just for Saturn and that parts from a Cobalt SS fit...

It's an Inline 4, not v4 (sorry, I'm a details guy)

You should decode the VIN using the decoder on our site to see which level Ion you have.
The non s/c levels share many parts but you want to know when ordering things in case there is a difference.

Okay, thanks for the tips. Also, I did notice how it lost "steam" over 5600.

Depending on your mechanical aptitude you could remove the throttle body and Intake manifold and port them using a rotary tool... I got better results with an air powered one but a plug in one will work okay as long as you go slow...

with those two mods and a short ram intake (using stock airbox lid) my car pulls hard out to around 6300... no notable loss of low end power either, unlike when you do the LE5(2.4L Ecotec) Intake manifold swap
