'06/'07 Ion Fuel Pump Assembly Recall
 

My fuel pump assembly has cracked causing a fuel leak. I found today that there was a recall (actually 2, one in 2009 and one in 2012) to solve this problem, but the recall was only valid in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, and Texas. The car was bought and is registered in Colorado. Has anyone had experience with trying to get the assembly replaced free of charge outside of these recall states? I spoke to a GM rep and they set up an appointment next week to have the car looked at, but it would be nice to know what i can expect from that appointment. Any info regarding situations like mine would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yep. I had the same experience with my 07 Equinox. Called GM and was told to call a dealer. Called the closest dealer and they told me that my VIN# wasn't on the recall list. I voiced my opinion on a Chevy forum and a GM customer rep offered to help. She got in touch with the local dealer, had them check and verify that it was in fact defective and then GM approved the replacement, free of charge. Your best bet is to call GM customer service and take it up with them.

I gotta agree with Rube -- the squeeky wheel will get grease. Be polite though ...

They kind of dragged their feet until I sent an email mentioning a friend of mine that works for a well known law firm in Nashville. Twenty minutes after I sent it, I got a phone call from Tina at Chevy customer service. She was very sweet and the rest of the process went smooth as silk. Except for the part where the dumbass that did the work forgot to transfer the fuel level sensor. I noticed when I picked it up that it was sitting on E and went across the street and put 12 gallons of gas in it and it was still on E. I went right back to the dealership and the service manager found the mistake by looking at the old pump. It took four of them to drop the gas tank then. LMAO

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I finally heard back from GM today and they are going to cover a portion of the repair. I am still responsible for $400 of it though, which is about what it would have cost me to just do the repair myself. I am not done yet though. I found a USA Today article that has Alan Adler from GM saying that they would extend the recall to vehicles in any state and pay for repairs assuming a certified dealership diagnosed the situation. So I am in the process of contacting some friends at the local Fox affiliate in hopes that they can help me shine a nice big spotlight on this problem.
