04 Ion, can’t add fuel, help!

So my car just stopped taking fuel. When you put the nozzle in you get 30-40 cents worth and then a click, and if you immediately try again you get fuel 8-10 cents at a time. If you wait 20-30 seconds and go slowly you can get another 30-40 cents. I know it’s evap related (no codes though) but I don’t know what component. Can anyone shed any light?

On the L series there is an evap solenoid near the cap that if it sticks closed the car won’t vent the tank.

Any way to work around it until I get home?

Only if you can access the fuel fill. Is it in the wheel well like the L? You might be able to crawl under and disconnect the vent hose to fill it up. The fill goes into the middle of my tank and the vent comes out the top to let the air out.

I’ll look under the car when I get the opportunity to, though it’s awfully cold to be crawling under it lol. Why couldn’t it mess up like this in the summertime?

I have the same problem with my 2004 Ion I. I know of at least one bulletin posted relating to this issue. Apparently. Spiders and other insects like to build nests inside the hose leading to the vent solenoid. This can be remedied by disconnecting the hose from where it connects to the EVAP canister, holding a rag below the hose. You need to remove part of the rear, right fender, just below the gas cap, and blow compressed air into the little hole with the angled face. The rag will catch anything falling out. I did this on my car, but nothing came out. My vent line wasn't plugged. Something else was the issue. I will post an update if I ever get it fixed.

EDIT: Did you ever get your issue fixed? If so, please let me know what needed to be done.

I haven’t done anything about the issue. I was told by a friend about filling it with the nozzle upside down and oddly enough that works great. I don’t know why but it does.
