Rear springs needed, 2009 Astra XE in Toronto.

I need rear springs for my 2009 Saturn Astra XE. My mechanic said that sections of both springs broke off at some point, likely before I bought the car.
Photos I took seem to back up his claim.
It is still very driveable but the springs should be replaced for safety and comfort. I guess the shocks are okay.
Question is, where can I buy them? Would a Chevy Cruze have the same? Unless there is a wreck somewhere in Canada or USA, would I have to search
European sources? Thank you.

Hi TorontoXEowner,

I started a thread on my hunt for front strut assemblies due to broken springs from our famously salted roads in Canada and a speed bump. Although you are looking for rear coil springs, there is a great discussion on Astra suspension repairs and AstraFasta has researched many of the front suspension parts. I did buy what I needed from partsavatar and a Germany company for the coil springs. Used parts from Kenny U-pull were not a great source for me but I did eventually find a useable strut assembly. Everything went together really well.

Thanks, yesterday I researched it out and a wrecker in Quebec has an XE, he said he would send a quote on Monday. If too $ive I will likely go with
Rockauto.com, they have a set for $251.02 Canadian $, shipping included! and new! so quite likely Rockauto.

The rear springs tend to break so I would not buy used springs, especially from a snowy area.

FYI - the XE springs ride higher than the various XR spring options did.

Let me look at my notes and I'll be back with more info on numbers.

Yes I know the suspension for an XR 2 door is different than the XE but I dont see many advertised for an XR anyway. Quite likely I will go for the Rockauto,
as besides being used, any wrecker springs would have to be removed. Will see what they quote anyway.

===>>> I think rear springs for the Astra are GM 93178630 (93178632 may be sports chassis).

CONFIRM IF THESE ARE SOLD AS SINGLES OR IN PAIRS!

Some places list these as leaf springs for some reason.

Parts numbers diagram for the rear suspension, although the numbers might not all be updated and should be confirmed with your VIN.

This is Quirk, a big GM dealer in New England (I don't know if set means price for 1 or 2 springs - ASK!!!).
https://www.quirkparts.com/oem-parts...bC1sNC1nYXM%3D

Someone is selling 93178630 springs on facebook (Flint, Michigan) and it is a package of 2 for $140 obo

FYI - We purchased Bilstein B3 (38-163531) on ebay from the UK. I think Bilstein updated their numbering scheme so you would need to search for newer numbers.
That was listed as OE Number: GM 93178630 "BILSTEIN - B3 OE Replacement for vehicles with standard suspension Fitting Position: Rear Axle" in the carparts-cat.com catalog. This is not the reinforced B3 part (38-163524).

OTHER RANDOM REAR SPRING NOTES:

93178632 seems to be the rear spring DISCONTINUED "AT08, AT,AR48(FE4)"
93178630 seems to be the rear spring NEW "AR,AT48(EXC FE4)"
Both seem to be for the AR and AT models (that means XE and XR per below) but the DISCONTINUED IS FE4

The Bilstein 36-209682 cross-references to the old 93178632 and is sold here

Thanks for your efforts! Quirkparts dont ship to Canada and Bilstein didnt list it so it seems Rockauto will be my choice, and it is a 93178630 so I should be okay but will ask my mechanic if I need extra parts to go with it.

AstraFasta2 Jul 26, 2025 08:21 PM

I would just check if RockAuto is selling 1 or 2 springs at the USD 158 price. I can't be 100% sure.

I have purchased a lot of stuff from RockAuto and never had an issue.

Some more suspension data points rear and front.

REAR -

We have the XE 5-door with 16" wheels
  • We DID install ACDELCO 93182103 rear shocks from RockAuto; they look and ride just like the originials IMHO.
  • We still have NOT changed the rear springs yet. But have the Bilstein B3 (38-163531) in a box waiting to install.
*******We had no issue with ride height B3 springs in the front (37-163563)

Buddy has the XR 5-door (sports package with big wheels (18 inch?)
  • He installed some Blistein B6 rear shocks IIRC.
  • He installed the the Bilstein B3 (38-163531) and the car is a bit high.
** He had HEIGHT issues with B3 springs in the FRONT TOO (37-163563)

- At this point you might replace some of the rear spring bumper parts. Here are part numbers to get you started

https://webautocats.com/epc/opel/a04/m/4

FYI rear springs Bilstein B3 (38-163531) were imported from UK ebay seller "TDC Automotive". Seller accommodated our odd request (US shipment & 4 rear springs); they arrived really quickly.

FRONT -

FYI - I think this is what we used for front suspension refresh on our Astra XE. Not 100% sure but it gets you started.

Front spring Bilstein 37-163563 (2x)

Front strut ACDelco 93195924

Front strut ACDelco 93195925

Tie rod end MOOG ES800264 (however, you should get ones with grease fittings)

Tie rod end MOOG ES800263 (however, you should get ones with grease fittings)

Strut mounts Moog K160335 (2x)

Strut bellow & bumper Moog K90462 (2x)

Sway bar links (2x) (get the steel ones with grease fittings even if the fittings are difficult to reach)
-
  • Probably need to replace coil spring insulator (rubber tube used at end of springs)
  • Should replace front lower control arms while everything is apart
  • The top nut for the strut need to be torqued down properly!!!!
  • Need to do tracking/alignment when done

Sadly I dont have that car anymore but I did get springs from Spareto in Estonia. I am likely going uy this https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...referralCode=2
