ignition cylinder not springing out when key removed
 

97 sc2 238k.
When I remove the key the Ignition doesn't spring out like normal. I can get it to pop back out to the normal position and be functional by tapping on the cyl with a screwdriver.

I'm not familiar with the mechanics of ignition cylinders. Is this a lubrication issue between the inner portion that holds the key and an outer sleeve or is the whole thing sealed. Hoping to know before I pull it apart.

Alternatively could this be the internal spring mechanism simply wearing out requiring ignition cylinder replacement?

Lock lube may just do the trick

Well I'll be damned -- sw2cam is right again.
Quite skeptically I used graphite powder -- seems to have helped tremendously. Don't understand why it worked unless spring is internal to the mechanism and was binding to some other internal piece.

Notwithstanding, could someone please explain to me about how the springy things work in our s car ignition cyls?

I know how it works, but I'm not telling. Search the internet, LOL.

I don't know how it works either, I have never had one apart but that stupid springy thing is important. If the ignition cylinder does not move correctly the steering wheel does not un-lock, I can't get the key out and I swear a lot.
I have developed the habit as I turn the key I also push or pull (depending on which way I am turning it and why) to encourage the springy things to keep functioning. Mine is a 94 with about 110,000 miles on it and is parked outside where the sun and heat constantly cause problems.
I use Graphite and either WD-40 or lately a synthetic oil which actually resists contamination from dirt and stuff better than dinosaur oil does. I can feel the ignition does not work as smooth as it did almost 20 years ago, but then again neither do I unless I too am slightly oiled.
