Hi. If, by "broken shifter", you mean the shift **** just flops around loose while the transmission remains stuck in one particular gear, I'll bet your shifter bushing has broken. It seems to be a common enough problem on Saturns that there's a guy on Ebay, whose handle I forget, selling bushings just for this reason that are tougher than the original ones. There are metal ones and plastic ones. I went with the plastic one when I had to replace mine.
It's a fairly simple and easy do it yourself fix, you only need to remove the part of the console that sits between the seats (and covers the parking brake and the gearshift) to get to it.

It's called a shifter cable bushing

His eBay is Saturnbushingman

I put two of the stainless steel replacements in about 15 years ago. No problems whatsoever.

You will have problems if you do not get the stainless steel sleeve made it with the bottom of the shifter quickly enough once you mix the JB weld. If this happens, the bond will last about 2 weeks, then fall off. User error, not product issue. Work faster. Ask me how I know. Dremel out the failed stuff before you try again. Don't take any of the stainless with it or it will be the wrong diameter internally

Hi just to update: saturnbushingman shipped my order after about a week so totally fine. Stuck with eBay international for about a month (not SBM's fault) and today it's installed. Super easy and perfect fix.
