Post Radio Woes (For a Toyota)

Greetings again SaturnForum,

Although a Saturn forum, I've been having an issue with one of my Toyotas - In my 1983 Toyota Pickup when using the cassette player, it seems to have a whine in the background of the current playing audio that correlates to RPM, most notable in first and reminiscent in second gear. 02 LW200 suggested a choke on the power feed to it, though online it seems others say a faulty/bad ground could be the culprit too. On ToyotaMinis, a member ID'd my cassette player as an older head unit (~1979) so it had been replaced from OEM of course.

https://toyotaminis.com/forum/thread...estions.30957/ (83pickup is me in the thread too hehe)

I do have a wiring diagram, although it doesn't state the radio is? grounded through the antenna (it fell off, but I still have it just need to reattach it somehow) a while ago so I don't think it's that since this issue started a couple months ago.

If anyone is an expert with audio, do let me know.

Regards,
-SelfEmploydL200

Suppose I should shield them somehow then? And would that include the distributor or just the wires? Like with some sort of EMF wrap.

Try using some emory cloth to clean the corrosion off of the spark plug posts on the distributor. If that doesn't work, try getting a hold of a new set of spark plug wires with better RF suppression. They weren't very good back in the day. It should be able to find something of much higher quality to express the RF. You should need to do all that wrapping. You should be able to purchase the solution as part of the product. But try cleaning up the connections at the distributor, both the post and the ends of the wires that go on them

The S cars were known for this. Most people never turn on their FM radio anymore in the old Saturn's so they don't hear it.

I'll try that emory cloth, or if it proves to be too much of a hassle I can always change plug wires. They still function fine aside that radio interference as of late so maybe their time is coming close...

Also, what do you mean by the S-Series were 'down for this'? Like the head units or something in the audio system was not too good?

You still need to clean off the distributor contacts as a thin layer of corrosion on it will also cause the problem. Doesn't sound logical but I've watched it take away the hum in real time

Gotcha, yes it can be hard to parse text online vs. in person of course!

I assume I'll need a points file, or some sort of abrasive thats compact for that since I imagine a brass or steel brush would be too clunky in there

I was referring to the contacts around the outside the cap where the plug wires connect, not inside
