'nother song thread

Dang it, I was just getting around to posting on the old thread and now it's closed.
Here's one that's a favorite of mine from my favorite artist:

I got a letter this mornin', how do you reckon it read?
It said, hurry, hurry, yeah, your love is dead
I got a letter this mornin, I say how do you reckon it read?
You know, it said, hurry, hurry, how come the gal you love is dead?
So, I grabbed up my suitcase, and took off down the road
When I got there she was layin' on a coolin' board
I grabbed up my suitcase, and I said and I took off down the road
I said, but when I got there she was already layin on a coolin' board
Well, I walked up right close, looked down in her face
Said, the good ol' gal got to lay here 'til the Judgment Day
I walked up right close, and I said I looked down in her face
I said the good ol' gal, she got to lay here 'til the Judgment Day
Looked like there was 10,000 people standin' round the buryin' ground
I didn't know I loved her 'til they laid her down
Looked like ten thousand were standin' round the buryin' ground
You know I didn't know I loved her 'til they damn laid her down
Lord, have mercy on my wicked soul
I wouldn't mistreat you baby, for my weight in gold
I said, Lord, have mercy on my wicked soul
You know I wouldn't mistreat nobody, baby, not for my weight in gold
Well, I folded up my arms and I slowly walked away
I said, farewell honey, I'll see you on Judgment Day
Ah, yeah, oh, yes, I slowly walked away
I said, farewell, farewell, I'll see you on the Judgment Day
You know I went in my room, I bowed down to pray
The blues came along and drove my spirit away
I went in my room, I said I bowed down to pray
I said the blues came along and drove my spirit away
You know I didn't feel so bad, 'til the good ol' sun went down
I didn't have a soul to throw my arms around
I didn't feel so bad, 'til the good ol' sun went down
You know, I didn't have nobody to throw my arms around
I loved you baby, like I love myself
You don't have me, you won't have nobody else
I loved you baby, better than I did myself
I said now if you don't have me, I didn't want you to have nobody else
You know, it's hard to love someone that don't love you
Ain't no satisfaction, don't care what in the world you do
Yeah, it's hard to love someone that don't love you
You know it don't look like satisfaction, don't care what in the world you do
Got up this mornin', just about the break of day
A-huggin' the pillow where she used to lay
Got up this mornin', just about the break of day
A-huggin' the pillow where my good gal used to lay
Got up this mornin', feelin' round for my shoes
You know, I must-a had them old walkin' blues
Got up this mornin', feelin' round for my shoes
Yeah, you know bout that, I must-a had them old walkin' blues
You know, I cried last night and all the night before
Gotta change my way a livin', so I don't have to cry no more
You know, I cried last night and all the night before
Gotta change my way a livin', you see, so I don't have to cry no more
Ah, hush, thought I heard her call my name
If it wasn't so loud and so nice and plain
Ah, yeah
Mmmmmm
Well, listen, whatever you do
This is one thing, honey, I tried to get along with you
Yes, no tellin' what you do
I done everything I could, just to try and get along with you
Well, the minutes seemed like hours, hours they seemed like days
It seemed like my good, old gal outta done stopped her low-down ways
Minutes seemed like hours, hours they seemed like days
Seems like my good, old gal outta done stopped her low-down ways
You know, love's a hard ol' fall, make you do things you don't wanna do
Love sometimes leaves you feeling sad and blue
You know, love's a hard ol' fall, make you do things you don't wanna do
Love sometimes make you feel sad and blue

Sorry for the delayed response -- haven't been around as much.....

Cool band (White Stripes) -- I love his angle on music -- straight ahead from his angle and doesn't care if you like it...it's music for the sake of expression, and if you share that "understanding" that drives him creatively, then you enjoy it.

Are you aware some of that the lyrics to this song date WAY back to the blues man/guitarist legend Son House in the 30s? Lyrics seem to have been rewritten along the way and evolved into what we have now. Just watched a raw acoustic version from 1968 by Son House himself. If you have not already checked it out, you should.

Are you a blues lover as well?

jamnar 12-24-2016 01:28 PM

Actually, I was indeed referring to Son House. House rendered this song in varying forms over the years but this was the most complete version of the lyrics I've found. The White Stripes version is OK but I MUCH prefer Son House's style. In fact, just about anything by Son House sounds good to me. And yes, I'm a blues lover for sure but especially the old delta style blues.

derf 12-25-2016 01:55 AM

Oh, yes....da blues.....so much music. so much expression.

When I watched the White Stripes version, it immediately hit me that it was not something Jack White would have written so I started poking around....

To be honest, I have never taken the time to dive into the Delta Blues, but I've never heard a Delta blues song I couldn't appreciate.

I'm more of an electric blues kinds guy. Yes, I know, it's not the "original" form of expression of the Blues, but it IS the expression of the Blues in its own time period.

I'm partial to John Lee Hooker.
The fluidity of his playing, paired with his low not quite gravely voice, cut through the air like a knife for me. You can tell by the look on his face that whatever is happening is coming from deep down inside.

So much of Rock n Roll is rooted in the Blues. So few seem to understand or care.

Their loss

jamnar 12-25-2016 01:08 PM

John Lee Hooker is definitely one of my favorites from the electric blues era for sure.

Rubehayseed 12-26-2016 08:46 AM

I'm more partial to Buddy Guy for blues, but we all have our favorites.

derf 12-26-2016 08:40 PM

Saw Buddy Guy at the annual Wheeling (WV) Blues Fest 2 or 3 years ago.

He was indeed amazing, but ran out of steam near the end. Hell he's probably 75 -- ok with me.

At one point, between songs, he started a conversation wit the crowd. He asked "now who was the greatest left handed guitar player of all time?"
A bunch of people started yeslling "Jimi!! Jimi!!"
His response: " Awww xxx! Now why'd you have to and xxx up my evening"? What is wrong with you!! Yeah, Jimi was great in his own way, but the answer is Albert King!! Go listen to some Albert King.......uohhhh xxx I don't believe it ..."

Then launched into the next tune

This was an all ages show

Rubehayseed 12-27-2016 07:17 AM

Yeah, we saw him a few years ago in Nashville. Jonny Lang opened for him and was good, but Buddy blew him away. He engaged the crowd and came out and walked around in the crowd too. He's a true entertainer. He said a few expletives in that show too, but everyone loved it.

jamnar 12-28-2016 11:19 AM

Been listening to Buddy Guy today on Pandora. Thanks! I can listen to those long grooves for hours.

derf 12-29-2016 07:12 AM

Albert King for me yesterday....

derf 12-29-2016 06:13 PM

Forgot to mention:

Listening to Albert King, I can hear a LOT of what Stevie Ray Vaughn must have drawn on for inspiration as he developed his raw blues edge. I know everybody is influenced by what came before -- it's just neat to go back now and then and hear different things in the same great classic blues music.

The music hasn't changed, but who it has inspired continues to grow.

jamnar 12-29-2016 08:34 PM

A favorite of mine by Skip James but I've heard this one played by a Mongolian group using traditional instruments and throat singing. Amazing how well it crossed over.

Hard time here and everywhere you go
Times is harder than ever been before

And the people are driftin' from door to door
Can't find no heaven, I don't care where they go

Hear me tell you people, just before I go
These hard times will kill you just dry long so

Well, you hear me singin' my lonesome song
These hard times can last us so very long

If I ever get off this killin' floor
I'll never get down this low no more
No-no, no-no, I'll never get down this low no more

And you say you had money, you better be sure
'Cause these hard times will drive you from door to door

Sing this song and I ain't gonna sing no more
Sing this song and I ain't gonna sing no more

Hard times will drive you from door to door

jamnar 12-30-2016 10:28 PM

I love Booker White's guitar playing on this one.

I was over in Aberdeen
On my way to New Orlean
I was over in Aberdeen
On my way to New Orlean
Them Aberdeen women told me
Will buy my gasoline

Hey, two little women
That I ain't ever seen
They has two little women
That I ain't never seen
These two little women
Just from New Orlean

Ooh, sittin' down in Aberdeen
With New Orlean on my mind
I'm sittin' down in Aberdeen
With New Orlean on my mind
Well, I believe them Aberdeen women
Gonna make me lose my mind, yeah

Aber-deen is my home
But the mens don't want me around
Aberdeen is my home
But the men don't want me around
They know I will take these women
An take them outta town

Listen, you Aberdeen women
You know I ain't got no dime
Oh-oh listen you women
You know'd I ain't got no dime
They been had the po' boy
All up and down.

Sometimes I come across stuff that I don't even know what it's called, just that it grabs me and I want more.

Anyone know who this is?

Why are you so scared and creeping around, taking photographs all over town, pictures in the dark that live in the light, the world is my playground too and I’ll do what I like. Why are you so scared of falling apart, intimidating me for falling apart, stay on your knees with your cross and don’t tell me you know so, the world is my playground too and I refuse to follow. Fly with me falling through the night, fly with me falling out of sight, find me hold me in your arms, ‘cos I’m scared of their controlling crowds. keep me calm, ‘cos I’m scared of their controlling crowds. here they come. Why are we so obscure and creeping around, hiding from mirrors and screens all over town, objects disturbing blinding taking the peace in me, the world is my kingdom too and I'll feel what I like in me. Killing my heart I can’t face I can’t face no more [x8] the world is my playground too I can’t feel anymore. Fly with me falling through the night, fly with me falling out of sight, find me hold me in your arms, ‘cos I’m scared of their controlling crowds. keep me calm, ‘cos I’m scared of their controlling crowds. here they come. Why are we so cold and breaking apart, caught up in this storm just breaking apart, pictures and colours I loved but don’t see anymore, the world is my playground too I don’t feel anymore, why are you so adored, ‘cos I’m scared of their controlling crowds. here they come.

Happy Happy New Year New Year.

A quick search pulls up a song entitled "Controlling Crowds" by a trip hop (look it up) progressive and alternative British band band Named Archive in 2009.

jamnar 01-23-2017 06:36 PM

You know hard time is just an old friend, just an old friend to me
I say hard time is just an old friend, just an old friend to me
Tell me now, old friend, when you gonna let me be?

Can't you feel a cold wind howlin' down, blowin' my song
Can't you feel a cold wind howlin' down, blowin' my song
Well, I ain't an old man, but you know my time ain't long

Gonna be a hard rain - you can hear it in the distance, sounds so near
Gonna be a hard rain - you can hear it in the distance, sounds so near
People, when the rain comes, it's gonna wash us all away from here

Mean old woman, people won't you tell me where can she be
Mean old woman, people won't you tell me where can she be
She's the only woman that ever meant a damn to me

You know hard time is just an old friend, just an old friend to me
I say hard time is just an old friend, just an old friend to me
Tell me now, old friend, when you gonna let me be?
Tell me now, old friend, when you gonna let me be?
Tell me now, old friend, when you gonna let this poor man be?

derf 01-28-2017 12:18 AM

Never heard this one as I am not a fan of the Gregg Allman style of anything. It is just misbalanced. Do they even tour as "the Allman Brothers" anymore?
Duane's guitar style completed that band. There were others quite talented as evidenced by their music, but he was so fluid and flowing that i just get lost in his playing. It draws you in.

Cool lyrics though

jamnar 01-28-2017 08:54 AM

I actually like a lot of what the Allman family has put out there, the long jams are fun for me but this song came from "hittin' the note" which is somewhat of a departure for the brand. On this album the songs are all blues and regrets of life choices on the road played in the classic Allman Bros style. Honestly it sounds to me like he's finally realized he's lost everyone dear to him because of the way they lived and partied with their fame and fortune and now he wants to warn others not to repeat the same mistakes. Gets a little redundant after the 3rd or 4th song. Unlike the others on that album this particular song is done acoustically on a resonator guitar and sounds so much like the old Delta Blues that I just fell in love with it.
