Not a big deal, Unc. I didn't realize you'd make this a public thing. I usually give folks the benefit of the doubt and don't get too concerned unless it gets to be over a couple of weeks without any contact. That's why I track all of my packages and give the tracking #'s to the other party. That way, they can't tell me that they never received the agreed upon item. I've been screwed two out of three times recently and probably won't offer to do this anymore, unless I KNOW they're a man of their word. I know you are, because of the generation you grew up in. We're men of our word and that seems to be something the younger generation just don't get. I'm not worried that you won't pay me. I don't think that will be an issue. And I don't care if it takes a while. You've got a LOT on your plate with your recovery and trying to take care of your wife too. I can respect that.

any body here have any experience with aftermarket electric fuel pumps? Granted for use with a carburetor? I've got one installed with a regulator adjustable from about 3 to what I think (sitting here writing) is 5 1/2 #. With a fuel pressure gauge on it. When 5# is reached is there something internal to the pump that would shut it off or does it simply cavitate? There is no tank return line, it is old school carburated. I am trying to trace down a random backfire noise (loud bangs) that begins shortly (with in 4 or 5 seconds after the car is started) The car starts. Runs typically smooth for 4 or 5 seconds. Starts to run raggedy and then starts random back fireing. The noise seems to come from with in the exhaust manifold. If for no other reason than a vacuum gauge mounted on the intake manifold does not show a pressure pulse at all on it's display. Some thing it would do if the back fire was taking place back through the carburetor. Assuming what is taking place is unburned fuel ending up in the exhaust manifold and being lit off by exhaust gasses and wondering how it got there, a valve hanging open on the exhaust side would cause it. But a compression test shows pretty much 125# Plus a bit on all cylinders. You can not have that and have a valve hanging open. Next thought, carburetor flooding causing cylinder to miss fire and pumping into the exhaust manifold. Two carburetors do the same thing. Now down to fuel pressure too high causing force feeding of gasoline through the carburetor flooding things (thus raggedy running) and then back fire through exhaust manifold. Flooded gasoline gets there on exhaust stroke of flooded cylinder. Engine V8 Chevy 350 Intake Generic Air Gap aluminum. Heads, world cast iron, also called DART II, compression about 9:1 Carburetor (currently) Carter ThermOquad. Also happened with AFB. Cam shaft under 1/2 inch lift with 70 and 80 degree intake/exhaust duration I ran compression check today (tricky to do with V8 engine in car and no room to install compression tester) I'll get spark plugs back in tomorrow. Ignition problems may be causing a miss fire, but I have measured dwell a number of times and it measures correctly indicating ignition working. If anyone has some thoughts, I am open to them. I have not verified fuel pressure as a potential problem as of this writing. |
Are you sure it's not a timing problem or maybe in the distributor, Unc? Maybe a defective vacuum advance?

No, actually I am not. The distributor is a swap meet purchase and although I have had it apart to verify the condition as not being shot completely and installed new points,and checked the condition and nothing has shown up yet that that looks like it is the distributor, my list of things that are not the problem, is getting bigger so I may have to go through it again to verify.

Check the side play in the distributor shaft, Unc. I Think either .004 or.005 is about the limit, but am not sure.
