Thornton "performance chips" for S cars

Hey folks,

Browsing the internet and stomach across what seems to be an awesome option for improving the performance of your OBD2 based Saturn S car. NOT.

I find it incredible that I can plug a chip into my OBD2 port that per the chip manufacturer Will learn my driving habits and remap my ECU but not overwrite any of the factory settings!

I can get a stage 3 chip that adds 60 horsepower to my 114 horsepower engine while also increasing my gas mileage by 5 mi per gallon. Talk about awesome.

I always thought you had to use more fuel or increase the displacement to get more horsepower out of a naturally aspirated engine.

I'm thinking they are simply cutting the amount of air so the fuel is more concentrated in the mix, the combustion is more thorough, both of which lead to increased power output and a reduction in the amount of fuel used per unit time. Pure genius.

The best part of this is that they make chips for the four cylinder, five-cylinder, six cylinder, and 8 cylinder versions of the SC2 engines. I've never found anyone that covers all of the configurations we have available to us.

-------

I wonder how it works.
  • HP gain w increase in gas mileage
  • Maps ECU
  • Doesn't change factory settings.
Here are some catalog pages for the non 4 cylinder variants

Almost “too good to be true”!
The caveat is the chip only works if you have a pair of cow magnets on the fuel line to line up the fuel molecules.

Wow! Kind of makes me wish I still had an SC DOHC car. How many did you order? LOL

Andy,

I don't remember exactly when you joined the site, but people used to sell this device called the Terminator that went in the air intake venting before the throttle body. It's claimed to fame was that it aligned the air molecules for less turbulence and smoother flow, thus increasing power output. Back in the day, when people acted up on the forum, the moderators at the time would ask them if they had tried the Tubonator. We never advised anyone to buy them, but it wasn't inside joke on the farm for many years. I don't think they're still available, but I might look into it just so I can get a picture of the silliness.

I'm not quite sure how you fit two cows that have eaten magnets both around the same fuel line.

Perhaps that can be slimmed down to cowpie magnets. The cow would have to take quite a strategic **** though.

I have personally driven two of these such devices off of Amazon with reviews that indicate there is no such chip device or anything else that can communicate with S car PCMs in this manner. The key is to be one of the first two reviews because they are always shown at the bottom. At least they were at the time. A one star Amazon review from two purchases pretty much sinks any product. Just call it fraud prevention

Looking out for foolish people! Back in the 80s when I worked at the big 4x4 repair shop in Bend Oregon the cow magnet scam was in full swing. Cow magnets
Are a real thing for cows, they swallow them and pick up small pieces of bailing wire that could kill a cow. The scam was to put two of the magnets on your steel fuel line between the mechanical pump and the carburetor. They of course claimed increased fuel mileage, we had almost a hundred lined up on the fluorescent light fixture in the shop. The lights got great fuel mileage, and the customers never missed them. LOL
April 2015, shortly after purchasing my first LW300.
