Hi, I don't own a Saturn but am trying to help my son figure out his in
Hawaii....
I know this isn't a new topic and I have read thru previous posts - 1995
Saturn SL2 overheating
Pretty typical: When he is moving along (over 30 mph) there is no ptoblem,
needle stays on 1/4....if he gets stuck in traffic it starts to go up. By turning
on the heat, it stays down. His water blows all at once, sometimes when he
stops. If he doesn't have any problems the water is at the same level next
time he drives it.From reading posts I was planning on purchasing a
thermostat and PCM valve before I go over to visit him next week - Am I on
the right track?? I really appreciate help - also would it be worth it to
purchase an online engine diagram? Thanks so much!!

Engine coolant temperature sensor would be the first thing I'd replace, then maybe the thermostat. I'd also check the cooling fan to make sure its operable.

Theres no such thing as a PCM valve. Theres a PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and a PCV valve. The car wouldnt run at all with a bad PCM and a bad PCV valve has nothing to do with engine overheating.
