Noob 2001 SC2 5 speed

Hello all, recently purchased a 2001 sc2 3 door 5 speed for my wife. Great running little car.

Welcome

Yes, welcome to the forum. Those ARE nice cars.

Thanks guys, drove my wife's SC2 ti work a few days ago and I was very happy with the outcome. She ran great with a 30+mpg average. 125 mile round trip. Probably could have gotten better mpg but I had to flog her a bit and there was a little traffic as well. Overall a good experience. .

watch for oil consumption every day or two for a few weeks. Low oil kills most saturn S car engines. It's new to you so better safe than sorry

I have owned both an SC1 and an SC2. I didn't find oil consumption an issue with the SOHC 1.9, but the DOHC did use about a quart between changes. IDK why.

Run 10W30 in it if the viscosity/temp charts say you can.

Thanks guys I'll keep the oil consumption in mind. It is running 10/30 right now. 😉 Great feedback guys.

Has anyone installed an oil catch can. Maybe that is the
Source of the oil consumption. Oil from the pvc valve blowing back into the intake. Just a thought.

Non AC Delco PCVs allow way too much oil to pass and should be avoided where possible.

Briefly, a varnish develops on the oil control rings, they freeze in their channels in the pistons, and fail to properly control the oil. letting some into the cylinders.

Add to that valve guide seals that leak more and more with time and you have a classic saturn burning oil. Some claim that 5W30 was too light an oil to be run in these engines.

It is.
