new member here

Hi there,
I am a new member but not new to saturns.in fact I am not new to cars. I have been a mechanic for the city of seattle for 31 years. I have 3 now. 99 SL1, 99 SL2, and 2001 SL2. I recently relaced a "leaky" trans on the SL1. not a bad job, it took abouit 6 hours ( not bad for my first one).

This car has 114,000 miles and the differencial / spider gear pin moved right on into the case. Of couse the bleeding could not be stopped, so a transplant was in order. Before I installed though, I staked the pin to stay put. Yes it would be harder to "repair" when it needs to come apart, but I hope I won't need to do that ever.

I also repaired a hemoraging automatic just this weekend. it seems the battery leaked acid on the filter and ate a hole in it. easy fix !

I have been trying for the best MPG I can get , and the last tank was 40.5 MPG. I will see if I can keep that going. Although I hate driving like my Grandpa, in these economic times it seems prudent.

I will be watching the threads to see if I can help others in any way.

Scott

What ten S-cars and I never had a a coupe or single cam. Best mpg from a twincam was 38 and that was my 1994 SW2 shifter car. All the others could pull off 36's from time to time.

i checked the non-confidential poll results and see that you didn't reply (?)

(course neither did I)

Hi there and waving! Not sure that I am all that concerned with gasoline mileage. Like many things more is in deed better but a paid for 16 year old Saturn that can get 33 mpg on regular basis on trips beats the hell out of a $35,000.00 Green econo-car that gets 45 mpg in my book. 'Specially one that has to down shift to pull the hills. My 94 Saturn coupe, an SC2 regularly gets 33 mpg between Phoenix and LA on I-10 providing I use cruise control. Speed limit is 70-75mph+ with A/C on and a few 7% grades that have to be pulled. A close friends 99 twin cam sedan with a 5 speed regularly got 43 mpg or better on the same trip. My Chrysler T&C gets 24 and makes me happy. I did not answer the poll. There is no klick off for 33mpg.

33 MPG is respectable....... especially at freeway speeds.I agree too . that the thought of $25-$45 thousand is no savings. I can buy a lot of "old" SL saturns for that much money.
