Intro to DriverOne

Hello! My name is Dustin. My wife and I own a 2002 Saturn SL1, with 269,000 miles on it. I'm looking forward to learning a lot more about my car than I already know, and I'm looking forward to making friends here. My Saturn has a lot of problems, but I won't list them here. DIY repair, here I come. :D

Hello and welcome, Dustin. Thanks for a proper intro. Now then, what's going on with your car and how can we help?

There are several issues. EGR valve light is on, sputtering idle, an on-off-type feeling when cruising at speed in any gear (doesn't do that under accelleration). Needs water pump and heater core replaced (I know how to do the water pump from a YouTube video). Overheats when sitting in traffic (may be the thermo switch). Brakes feel weak and underpowered but don't have a spongy feeling. Clutch seems to stutter when engaging. Very well may need a cat-con. Oil light is on though I have changed the oil. Intake is horribly choked and could use a cleaning (sea foam treatment?). The paint is coming off in several places and the bare metal is rusting. I think the car could use a replacement hood as ours is rusted and has a good-sized dent in it. My wife is also looking for some stock 15" SL1 rims.

We have pictures!! A little rough but if she drives good she can save you gas money.

Yikes! You need to do a hell of a lot of work to that car ASAP. The first issue I'd address if it were mine is the brakes. Check your pad and shoes and if they're thin, then replace them and bleed them. The other stuff can wait a few days. If you can't stop, then you may die.

Thanks, sW2cam! Rubehayseed, I bought some drums, shoes, and pads for it. I've got a heater core and a Chilton's Manual.

Let us know how that heater core job goes. I'm very curious about that one. The brakes should be easy. Relatively speaking.
