Instrument cluster issue

Good evening. I am new to this forum. I have a 2002 Saturn L100. The issue i am having is when i am driving every few miles the cluster basically shuts off except for the tachometer and the digital odometer goes backwards as well as the trip odometer and if the headlight switch is in the on position all the dash lights flash on and off and at night time when the automatic light is activated all the lights flash including the headlights while the cluster shuts off. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I bought the car a year ago with 52,000 original miles and it currently has 58,000 miles. Thank you. Chris.

Unfortunately the cluster is controlled by the body control module. The BCM is a known problem with this series of cars. Usually the first symptom is odometer failure. This is expensive to repair and usually requires professional assistance. I have had several of these cars and have one that the odometer does not function. You sound like your car has a more serious failure going on.

I just had the a/c evaporator core, heater core, blower motor and resistor replaced with factory oem saturn parts . The car has been great and i am very pleased with it. The security light also does a quick flash when the issue is going on. Also the engine stays running and does not bog or skip a beat. I also had replaced the dimmer switch/ trunk release because the old one was having issues with the dash lights dimming on it's own. I would have to jiggle the switch for the lights to come back on.

Did the car have this issue before the under dash work? It may be a faulty ground connection which occurred during reassembly.
