I have a 1993 Saturn SW2 Wagon. With a full charge on the battery, the
starter will not even click when I turn the key. To get it home, some
friends and I push started it and it runs fine. I also tried turning
the key with the engine running, but nothing happened (the usual nasty
buzzing/grinding sound didn't happen).



The problem occurred while delivering pizza. I started the engine fine
for one delivery, but on the second delivery the engine turned over
slowly then caught. On the third delivery, the starter would not make
any noise at all, which has been the case ever since. Everything else
is normal, i.e. the dash lights light up normally when the key is in
position, etc...



I checked the clutch safety switch which is normal (the switch under
the clutch pedal that requires the clutch to be depressed while
starting).



I also tried removing the starter, but it seems impossible to reach the
upper starter mounting bolt. The Chilton Manual I have says something
about an obstruction wrench. Is there a specific obstruction wrench I
will need to buy? I am stuck until I can reach that bolt. If anyone
knows which tool I need, please reply as soon as possible. I'm not
making any money while my car is out of service.

I have worked at a Saturn facility as a technician for 10yrs. now and have never heard of an obstruction wrench. What I use is a 13mm swivel socket and an extension adn a 3/8 ratchet. It's still a little bit of a pain in rear but it works fine. If you have a 3/8 swivel and a 13mm socket then you should be fine. Hope this helps.

Rleopard is exactly right use the 13 with the swivle, you will need some patience, but it will work

Got it! The nut was too tight for the swivel ratchet. I ended up
cutting down a box-end wrench so that it fit in that tiny space, then
prying on it with a 6 foot metal adz. It worked like a charm :) Maybe
next time I'll just pull the engine, though (just kidding [img]smileys/smiley2.gif[/img]).
