starter problem

Hey guys
2001 saturn sc coupe prob.

a buddy of mine is having an issue with his starter. the old one was gone so he got a new one.
the problem is the new starter will engage and turn the engine on disengage but continue to spin so we turn it off the first time.
the starter never stops spinning. we disconnect the battery and stops. as soon as we connect the battery it starts to spin. we take it to get tested and passed 3 times.
please help. what could be the problem?
Thanks in advance

is it the correct starter for the car?
Are the purple and red wires attached correctly?
does it happen in all ignition positions?

yes it's wired correctly and it is the right starter. the key doesn't even need to be in the ignition and the starter spins like crazy. it never did this with the other starter. as soon as we connect the battery it spins.
