Please give me some clues on this one. I have a 98 SL2 with 106,000 miles. I bought it used about a year ago (I think it was abused as a child). In the last couple of weeks while driving at highway speeds, I would feel a 'miss' every once in a while. This past weekend the SES light flashed for a while and then stayed on. The miss was then constant. I put on new wires, new plugs, cleaned and checked the EGR valve and cleaned the throttle body by spraying it with intake cleaner and using a brush.... Still the same.
I noticed that if I remove the #1 plug wire, the engine runs the same! Checked for spark, but it looks good. I do not have a compression tester at home but it seems to have compression.
I am wondering if I am getting fuel to that cylinder?
Any thoughts?

What are the SES code(s)? (Pxxx)

Could be ignition/coil pack issue....

I hooked up the scan tool today and got the code P0301 </span>which comes back to Cylinder 1 Misfire</span>.
Is that a spark issue? I get a spark from the plug with the plug out of the cylinder, It may not be firing under a load (?)

Since you have spark and are not getting any DIS codes, I will venture to guess that this is not an ignition-related issue (though you may wish to investigate the coil packs and DIS module further to be safe).

I would recommend you check compression (on all cyls while you're at it) -- there is likely a compression issue in #1....

Please post compression readings for all four cyls

Cylinder 1 = 25
Cylinder 2 = 160
Cylinder 3 = 165
Cylinder 4 = 175

Probably a valve issue, though I suppose it is possible that it could be a head gasket issue in the vicinity of that cyl.... or a failed compression ring

PULL THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR OFF OF THE INJECTOR for the #1 cyl -- otherwise the air/fuel mix which is not burning will "wash" the cylinder (fuel will thin out the oil in the cyl and trash the cyl liner)

Let us know what the cause was

I know it has been I while, but I work slow! After pulling the head, I discovered a burnt exhaust valve on the number 1 cylinder. After looking at the new Aura, and then my bank book, I had the head machined and the valve &amp; seat replaced. I have a new set of gaskets and I am putting it back together. Just have to find the time to complete it.

[img]smileys/smiley1.gif[/img] So it is a happy ending to my problem. I got the engine back together last weekend and drove it every day this week to work (75 miles round trip). I am monitoring the oil to see if I have any leaks, keeping my fingers crossed. Sounds quiet with good acceleration.
