My 09 Aura has that feature where the computer tells you when to change the oil. I,m very skeptical of this because I now have 7500 miles on the car and the computer is indicating I still have 25% oil life left. I was always under the impression that you should change the oil every 3 to 5k miles

Any opinions on this please?

I am assuming (you know assumptions) that the sensor that measures the amount of ''life'' left in your oil is looking at the opacity (how darkthe oil has become). If you are not running in a harsh or dirty environment, I guess that it would be possible to get extended use out of your oil.

You have given me a task - to find out more about the technology behind this system ... thank you

Just change your oil when the OLM tells you to....

OIL ... LIGHT ... MONITOR

OK will do! however as someone who comes from a generation who always changed my oil at 5k miles I find it hard to fathom that I could get 10k miles out of a regular (non synthetic) oil

Well I use MOBIL-1 and have been starting back in 1979. Would evan if I changed the oil&filter at 3k. The OLM works believe it or not.
