Has anyone changed their freeze plugs?

I have a 1998 saturn sl1. Do you know where the freeze plug(s) located and how to get to them?

I'd ask if yours were leaking or if you had actually popped one , but if they were, you'd know where they were, no?

Why do you ask? In an era of available 50/50 coolant mix, these shouldn't require fussing with......

I've never had to replace one on a Saturn. They have rusted through on other GM cars of the same vintage.....must have something to do with the extensive use of aluminum on the Saturns.Heater cores have cracked, but that was from a diluted coolant mixture.

good to know, hoseppi....i like aluminum

hoseppi 11-03-2009 07:27 AM

Aluminum is great till it gets overheated, like any other metal. Bigvjza80, freezeplugs are not a routine maintenance item....why do you want to replace them?******News flash... Derf, I guess the joke is on us. I started wondering about why I haven't had any problems with freeze plugs, so I went back to my storage yard, checked over a few engines, and found out that there are no stinkin freeze plugs. My credibility would have been in the toilet, if I had said in my opening statement, that I had only changed a few.... good thing I am too stupid to be a BSer

The does not have a blown head gasket it doesnt show any signs of it because me and my mechanic friend already checked. Everytime I shut off engine all the radiator fluid leaks out and it is coming from the passenger side of the engine leaking right above the thermostat and fluid recovery tank hose. It is not steam it is actually fluid.

well, that would explain the lack of posts regarding them, no?

cracked head?
