I read you could drive with a bad one at this point I am going to get rid of the car soon what's the cost to replace it if its cheap enough I would do it you can get a rebuilt one for under 100 how long does it take to replace it it looks fairly easy to get too if its cheap enough under 500 I would prob do it to get maybe another 6 months out of the car or longer

 

Looking at the belt diagrams I believe that you can replace the belt and leave the defective a/c compressor in place. Your car was available with and without air conditioning. I will post both diagrams. The compressor is in the lower right position. If you have your mechanic install a belt for your car for the non a/c option, it should solve your problem.

thanks I am sure he can figure this out at this point I hope to get a 2nd car soon ( I have a 2002 firebird that I cannot drive in the winter) so this Saturn is going to be going as soon as I get another car

 

If you are replacing the compressor, remember that it involves capturing all of the refrigerant in the system, then disconnecting the lines to and from the compressor, possibly flushing the AC system and possibly replacing other components in the AC system. And if there's not much refrigerant in your system now, they're also be a charge for additional refrigerant. Plus labor for all of this.

So do not be surprised if your mechanic quotes you for additional things

 

Don't bother replacing the compressor if you're going to get rid of it. Just have your mechanic put the non a/c belt on it and sell it. There's no point in sinking money into a car you're not going to keep.

 

I think that is what it is I read you can even bypass it which may not be a good idea I don't care about the air cond in the winter by summer I will prob have another car it just has a lot of things going on. stalling not sure if that would make it stall it started stalling the same time as the noise from the compressor

 

If the compressor bearing is making noise, it is bad enough to make your car stall at idle. Take the belt off and see if it quits stalling. If it runs correctly put a belt for a non air conditioned car on and drive it. I have done this with many cars for years.

 

yes I hate to put a lot of money into it it does stall at idle has done a few times I don't care about air if I can get a few more months out of it I would be happy I have a 2002 firebirdi can't drive in the winter

 

it did stall a few times the last few times I took it out it has not its making like a spitting noise I can't work on cars I have no clue I can have my mechanic look at it of course it has to go while he is working on my 2002 firebird

 

Just do what derf suggested, will ya? Take the belt off, start the car and see if it stalls. DO NOT DRIVE IT. It will overheat and kill the engine entirely. If the car doesn't stall, get the fan belt that bypasses the a/c compressor and then do with it what you will. I'm officially out of this conversation now.
